I spent 5 years as a mod and admin for a site with about 15,000 members, and the more I thought about that question, the more depressed I got.

We had company over again last night, and were able to spend many hours bringing up the new people through easy and solidly into medium. Great fun. If we had the LP, would have been complete! Be careful what you wish for. I did the forum mod thing for a semi-popular Final Fantasy site many years ago. We had about 5K members before the site folded up.. it's not as 'fun' as you think it may be. You run into a lot of very rude people, you have to deal with interpersonal politics (ie. one mod doesn't think what a member is doing is bad, you do, you take action, other mod gets peeved, calls in higher power).. it's not as cut and dry as it sounds, nor is it really all that fun.

It's pretty stressful, actually, unless you're on a board with rock solid rules that never flex and all mods enforce them equally.. which often times just isn't the case.

It's almost never the case. Mod work always seems to come down to judgement calls, and there's never a way to please everyone... and those who aren't pleased are always angry to a degree far out of proportion to what is reasonable.

It's not the hardest job to do, but you're right that it isn't all roses, either.
