View Full Version : Breaking the Genre Barrier

I know that the game is called "Rock Band" but that doesn't necessarily mean that only straight up rock should be included. "Rock Band" is just a title; the game probably wouldn't sell as well if it were called "Music Band". I keep seeing so many people trashing other musical interests just because you don't want to play it or because "the game is called ROCK Band." Is it really gonna hurt anybody if country or rap (with instruments) was released as DLC? If you don't like it, don't buy it. Personally, I'm hoping for other areas of music to be explored by this game. I probably wouldn't buy most country that's released and even less rap, but part of my reason for buying it was for that very potential. And, for the record, I'd really love for some blues to be added.
I'm not saying that you guys shouldn't express opposing views; I'm asking why you feel the need to absolutely berate others for their interests.

I'm not so much against country as I am against rap. With rap it is basically because of the severe lack of instruments. Yeah, the vocalist is busy but no one else would be.
There are only a few rap/rock collaborations that would work. But just pure rap or R&B is just not going to work IMO.

true we wouldnt have to buy it but it wouuld replace dlc that people actually want. the majority says no to rap so they shoulodnt add it. plain and simple. plus they would prob loos emoney since noone would be buying it besides a few people.

Thank you so much for bringing this up. I think starting a separate thread on this topic on its own was much needed. :)
Anyway, any DLC that comes out will replace some things people want, so that's inevitable; can't make everybody happy, heh.
IMHO, rap on it's own simply won't work again as it has been said before that a majority of rap/hip-hop/R&B does not use the 4 instruments provided. Rap and hip-hop clearly wouldn't work, but to expand upon R&B, in its current state, I see it less likely it would work; however, it is called "rhythm and blues" and looking back to some of the older music in the genre, perhaps it could be done.
As it has been said, some fusions of rap/rock would work and only some. We clearly saw Beastie Boys's Sabotage in the game, and it worked fine (on a side note, I'd love to see their Fight for Your Right (To Party) someday).
I posted a major "rant" in one of the "Country DLC" threads and I'll post part of it here:
Rock and country share the same origins and have similar musical qualities. So the point about "it's called ROCK Band" fails immensely.
Most people would consider The Eagles a rock band. However, little do they realize that they're actually a hybrid of country and rock. They would fall under the fusion category of Country Rock.
What about Lynyrd Skynyrd? People consider them to be rock but they're a mix of Blues Rock, Southern Rock, and Hard Rock. Not to mention because of their use of the blues, they share a lot of components from country. Yet do people not want Free Bird again in RB?
Personally, I never thought I'd defend country to this degree (because I don't really listen to it), but it is how ignorant people really can be that bothers me. :(
Again, people need to stop flaming and being ignorant fools. When some music is requested, sure it's a silly request, but not all of it is. So think before you stick your foot in your mouth.

the only ignorant fools are the ones wanting country music in rock band

Um...you really are missing the entire point of musical continuity aren't you? Heck you completely missed the whole point made about the similarities of the genres, didn't you?
Requesting country is not ignorance because the people realize that there are many songs in the genre that would work perfectly, clearly unlike say techno or trance.

Thank you for starting this discussion. My hopes for this game has always been to get away from the metal rock that defind guitar hero and broaden the scope to other areas. I don't care if Harmonix wanted to put Hannah Montaina or the Hanson on there, but expand the genre please.
Country is the perhaps the easist fit and should be considered. if not as DLC then as a stand alone title.

Oh I think you'd care if Hannah Montana and/or Hanson got in there. As much as they could possibly technically work, most people here wouldn't even touch it. :D :p
But I get your point :)
