This Rumor has been Refuted. Meaning, It's been proven false!

Is Microsoft releasing a new console next year? That's the word according to 1Up's Sam Kennedy (Mister Kennedy!!!). According to his sources, not only will Project Natal will be released as an add-on for the Xbox 360, it will also be an integral part of a new Xbox system.

"Microsoft will not only release Natal as an add-on for the Xbox 360, it will come standard with the next Xbox console. Yes, there will be a new Xbox console next fall.

However, the new console won't just be an Xbox 360 with a camera, though -- we've heard it will be considered a new platform and carry a new name (Xbox Natal?). It's not clear what sort of upgrades we might see, but some have suggested it will be an slight upgrade of the current Xbox 360 technology. Current Xbox 360 games would be playable on it, but future games would be able to take advantage of the added muscle."

Kennedy has been covering games for an awfully long time and has outstanding sources, but the whole thing seems off to me. Microsoft is doing well with the Xbox 360 and it seems way too soon to confuse and splinter the market by introducing a new product. Increasing the momentum, or maintaining it at the very least, of the Xbox 360 seems like the smarter thing to do, especially with a strong first-party lineup and a price drop coming from Sony within the year. It just doesn't make sense to muck with customers and developers with a new product when the current one hasn't even peaked.

What do you think of the possibility of a new Xbox coming out next year? Would you buy it? Or are you content with the Xbox 360? Wouldn't you prefer that Microsoft put a full effort behind the 360? Or are you itching for something exciting and new (like the Love Boat)?

Most likely a PS-Slim kind of thing, but with Project Natal maybe integrated into the case somehow. That's my thought. But, hopefully it'll be overall better and decrease the RROD rates.

I wouldn't buy a new Xbox, unless it was that Red Resident Evil 5 one. My Elite does my just fine and if it's not a Next-Next Gen console, then there's no real point, if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure this is just a rumor.

I don't believe it myself. But whatever.

I just think another system is much too soon at this point.

Not enough advances in technology?

I agree.

I'd actually have to agree. It's too soon. The 360 is about 4 years old already. Putting a new console out so soon is just stupid.

It's just the 360 can handle whatever is thrown it's way at this point. Making another system with that in mind would just be bad, especially considering the american economy. It'd be bad business.

True, except to get the economy going again we need things to buy, we need to have more wants, more motivation to work and more production[jobs] to buy.

Endless cycle. :p

Fair enough.

Fair enough.

Although, since this economic downturn is different than usual ones. [Because this one is fundamentally based]

Who knows what will work to fix it.

I'm also thinking it will just be something like the small PS2 and the PS1. We've barely started the current gen, I don't think there's a need to release the next gen so soon.

Especially considering how they treated their last former console when the new one came out, tossing it into a shallow grave...

The rumors are that they'll be making minor CPU, GPU, and RAM upgrades, making it run existing 360 games smoother while making games coded to run on it almost unplayable on the 360. We shall see, though.

If I wanted to shell out a few hundred bucks every couple years I'd be a PC gamer.

Don't need a new system now, MS, but I'll window shop it for you.

Hasn't Microsoft gone on record as stating that their next system won't come out until 2012?

Not that I am aware of... then again, what one publisher says today might not be the same tomorrow.

Way too soon! But if it has enough upgrades and all my DLC will transfer I'll get it.

So since the above rumor is false. Here is some different info regarding the same thing.

The Interwebs were astir yesterday after 1UP claimed to have learned that Microsoft was planning to introduce a redesigned and upgraded version of the Xbox 360 sometime next year, around the launch of the Project Natal add-on. Well now, not only have those rumors been refuted, they’ve been expanded upon to create an all-new super rumor.

Citing double-secret insider info, the folks over at TeamXbox report that Microsoft has no plans to introduce a new Xbox 360, but they say that a special edition of the console with built-in Natal support is still entirely possible. However, the biggest new addition to the rumor pile is that over the next few weeks, new information (which TeamXbox claims to already be privy) will start being released about the next Xbox.

For now, the only thing TeamXbox will reveal at this time is that Microsoft doesn’t plan on launching a new console until “a certain type of television becomes more widespread, because in addition to built-in Natal tech, a key feature of the next Xbox would be full HD stereoscopic 3D visuals similar to 3D movie theatres.”

Well played TeamXbox. Of course, until someone actually confirms any of this info, none of it should be believed. I mean, it all sounds plausible enough (a bit more plausible than I usually like my rumors to be honest), but we don’t even know that much about Project Natal yet, and we're already talking about two new consoles, one that supports 3D HD gaming? Let's pace ourselves, people.

But as long as we’re tossing rumors around, here’s one for you: In addition to hands-free motion-control support, the next Xbox will also support Microsoft’s Surface technology with your TV being the main screen and the Surface display as your secondary screen, sort of like a living-room sized version of the Nintendo DS. Now we play the waiting game to see whose rumor is right.
