View Full Version : Score Duel Rant

I had my first experience with Score Duel tonight and I have to say I am disappointed. I am currently working my way through medium on drums and have mostly 4 and 5 starred the songs in the solo tour. I decided to try the score duel and see how that worked. I signed in and after a minute or so was matched up against another player. That player got to select the song and difficulty.
I was hoping I wouldn't get someone playing on expert as that is definitely out of my league. Well, the player chooses Learning To Fly and selects Medium. 'Great' I'm thinking. I love that song and can play it pretty well. And I am relieved that I didn't draw someone who was playing on expert. We finish the song and I killed it with 99% and he gets 94%. Whew, my first forray in to online score duel is a success.........Not so fast.
When score screen comes up as soon as I see the scores the other player goes on to the 'New Song, Retry, Exit' menu and immediately selects New Song. Okay, no problem........
Well the song list appears and the player flies down the song list to the bottom and selects And Justice For All. Then they select Expert. Wth? I know already after the song choice that I am toast as I can do that song in easy and have muddled through it in medium 1 time. Well, i pretty much forsake the bass pedal about 20% in the song and just attempt to hit as many notes as possible. I play through the whole song (I didn't disconnect like alot of people would have) and we get done. This knucklehead does the song at 99% while I did only 56%.
I guess my rant is what satisfaction does someone get out of playing a song at 2 levels below their difficulty. losing, and then doing another song at the difficulty they should be playing?
I am just a casual player who loves this game and I have made great strides on drums since I started 2 weeks ago. However, after this experience with online score duel i'll probably not play that again as its no fun for me to be 'tricked' by someone who I guess just wants to build up their leaderboard stats. I just don't see the fun in doing that to someone......

what it comes down to is that some people are freaking losers and the only way they can feel good at life is by beating people that arent as good as them at a video game.

I think this was the first comment on these forums that made me belly laugh.

I did laugh at that too. Obviously thats what happened to me. I don't mind losing, hell its just a video game. It just takes the fun out of playing that particular feature of the game. I just wish there was a way to select your difficulty before you get matched. That wouldn't deter goofballs like the guy I played but at least it wouldn't take the enjoyment out of the game.....

If you play ranked you select your difficulty and get a random song. A little more fair I guess but sometimes you wind up with a crap song.
I only use the player match to play with friends.

Yep... I got beat tonite twice in medium ranked matches by someone who got 100% on both songs, and not even that easy of songs. Some people really are just that pathetic.

I feel dumb for asking this, but how do you do a ranked match? I've never seen an option like that before.

It's a ranked match. They're there to win. If that means selecting Medium and hitting every note, that makes perfect sense. I don't do ranked matches in just about any game because it's not my cup of tea (I'm much more a co-op kind of person), but really, what are you expecting? Since they're playing in a ranked field, they're probably not going to choose that venue to push themselves beyond their limits and risk losing unnecessarily. It's about winning.

i just play with a band, guitar/singer/drummer/bass. The competitive score duel and tug of war isent that fun too me. To me this game is about fun, dont really get much pleasure from beating them, unless im playing pleasure pleasure ofcourse.

Maybe it was two friends on the other end switching off- one of whom was really good and the other one wasn't. I always try to give someone the benefit of the doubt in a situation like that- not to mention I find it hard to believe that someone who could score so well on a tough song on expert would have difficulty on medium

Thanks for the info. I just tried out the Ranked Match.....Thats exactly what I'm looking for. I just went 3-2 in 5 matches. The random song choice kinda stinks but at least the players seem to be playing on the difficulty they should.
Thanks again!

So by them beating you on your difficulty they become pathetic? What? You play ranked matches to win. If you don't like getting beat, either get better or play on easy. Jeez.

There was no way it was 2 people. They immediately selected to play another song and went straight down to the tough songs and selected the difficulty. No big deal. As I said I just tried the ranked match and it was a much better experience.

I would be almost positive it was two guys, as I've done it before once or twice haha.
There's plenty of time to switch, like during loading or before the song starts and it introduces the characters. The fact that they picked the song fast doesn't mean jack.
But anyway, yeah just stay on ranked.

Nah, I'm not gonna post their gamertag here. But they did do it. Unfortunately I was too busy trying to hit any notes I could so I didn't get to see them play. But they did destroy that song. My fiance was watching us play and she said they killed it.

The ranked match stuff....is that only on Xbox Live or can you do it on PS3 as well? I haven't seen that option on PS3.

there's always the posibility that you played against two different people using the same account. First was the less expierenced player then the expert player. The expert player should have gone on to play someone else but the internet is full of folks that will do whatever it takes to win.

Tch, if he/she did get someone else to play the second song, that's just cowardly. I don't have any fun beating someone with flying colours and a score 50k+ more than theirs. I enjoy losing once in a while, and coming really close in scores, it makes it more competitive and, therefore, more fun.

What is this ranked match everyone is speaking of? I can't find that option anywhere.

I don't know if its different on the PS3, on the 360 when you select Score Duel or Tug of War from the Multiplayer menu you are then given the option of local, player match (unranked where you can play your friends) or ranked where your opponent is drafted for you and your song selected by the game.
