I just bought rock band from gamestop on saturday (yesterday) and I was wondering how I could tell which generation I had based on some serial number or something on the drums to see if they are the first generation ones that break.

Look on the bottom of the box. There should be a date sticker. I'm not positive but it seems ones from November are better quality than October. Only one way to find out, try playing yours and see whether it's bad.

Seriously, I would just play it, it will become abundantly clear. I bought mine yesterday from a Gamestop too and it only took about an hour of play on easy/normal for the strum to crap out. I swear the adhesive on the back of post-its are more reliable.

Ah I'm not sure there are different generations of drums. I know they changed the way the sensor works on the guitar from contact to magnetic, but I thought the drums were more a matter of luck in that some might fail and some might work, but they are all made to the same form.
I could be wrong though, I've only been researching this since last night after all.

ah ok, thanks anyway, any other opinions?
I might be paranoid but it seems like the yellow pad doesnt work unless I hit it in close to the center or really hard on the outside ( well not really hard, but harder than normal)
Since most issues didn't surface until RB launched, I'd say the best boxes would have a Dec date.

A friend of mine has the exact same problem. You need to request a replacement. Unfortunately, all generations share same model #

right, but what was the date on his box?
I figure since mine is the 31st of october, and pretty close to november, that I should be ok for now.

If an issue develops, you can always return it then. I too am very skeptical about the drums right now, given the state of the guitar and the reports of troubles people are having with the other instruments. If there is a new generation, I certainly want it, but I don't really have a basis for returning mine yet since they are working fine.
Mine is 3-november for the record.

Don't know exact date but it is Oct something. The issues didn't become known until 3rd week of Nov so any units before then are pretty much guaranteed to not have had the issue addressed yet.
This doesn't mean all units are faulty. My drums work great (so far). My box is dated Oct 25th.

ugh mine says oct 23, I hope my periph's last for a long time. I noticed the strum bar is a little loose, but it doesn't affect the gameplay, I guess I'll just wait and see how it goes...

Also, whats a good way to test if you can drumroll or not (to test if the drums register)

In practice mode, pick a song where the drums don't start right away. Then bang repeatedly on a pad. If you notice that the hits aren't all registering on screen, you know the pad is faulty.

I know I don't; my strum for guitar is funky, bass pedal broke, and I just found out that my snare cant do drum rolls unless you hit it softly.
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded much if HMX had pushed back the game a few months so they could get the peripherals working properly. I am gonna wait until they make flawless/nearly flawless instruments then use my warranty to get them.
