View Full Version : The RB vs. GH "War"

I'm pretty sure this only exists in the minds of the community and Brian Bright.

Otherwise, I'm sure there are people at HMX and people at Activision/RedOctane/etc that are great friends and want to see both franchises succeed.

amirite or amirite?

I've seen HMX folk tweet (twit?) to the Neversoft Dev page on Twitter, so I'm sure there are good relations between the two groups of employees.

Guaranteed that the "war" only exists in the minds of the more rabid RB/GH fanboys. I can't see HMXSean or HMXHenry conducting guerilla raids on Neversoft to steal away masters. :D

Yeah, the "war" is mostly for idiot fanboys and clueless Activision CEOs.

Most people who play Rock Band games still play Guitar Hero games too.

i have a good friend that works at Vicarious Visions. He said he and his coworkers bought RB2 when it came out and jammed the night away.

Interesting fact:
After the TB:RB presentation at E3, Neversoft (specifically "GuitarHeroDevs") Twittered "Congratulations to the folks at Harmonix and their accomplishments!"

Is this what you think about when you can't sleep, or was it more of a sit-in-a-bathtub-"EUREKA!" kind of thing?

Probably more of a sit-on-the-toilet-"THAT'S IT!" kind of moment.

I think it's more of an arms race between 2 former colleges. There is no war.

Due to patents Harmonix still profits from GH sales, so to them I'm not sure if it was ever much of a "war." It is more of a perception among the fanbases and the gaming community.

Maybe there were "bragging rights" along the way, but that's a long way from a war.

Ha, seriously? That stands to reason, since they were the originators.

To some extent, they must hope that GH succeeds as much as possible :)

I just showed this post to a GH fanboy. The following was his reaction:

I like to think they dress up in costumes of the Civil War era and have reenactments of Stonewall Hinkleman and the Battle of Bull Run. The real problem is thay they always have three people dressed as Abraham Lincoln which is three to mant Abraham Lincolns.

If there is any sort of "war", it's between Activision and EA who have always been rivals, and the marketing departments of each company whose job, of course, is to make their product superior. And, of course, the fanboys.

Good to know the devs don't take it seriously though.

Haha,I love how the fanboys on this site say there is no war but there is constant GH bashing(See GH:Smash Hits Thread). Somebody always has to bring GH into any conversation with RB and then somebody inevitably says GH sucks. Let Rock Band stand on its own.

It's only a war when the two opposing forces do nothing but scream that their game/console is better, without actually voicing an educated opinion about WHY their game/console is better.

When you explain, it's more of an interesting debate... that can turn into a war if some idiot joins in.

If there were RB and GH fanboys here,it would turn into a war pretty fast.

Well the GH:WT music creator was one of their "big things" and it turned out to be pretty mediocre. You can only play the Mario theme and your cell phone ringtones so many times.

If HMX is truly making money off of GH somehow still, then I think that's hilariously awesome.

I don't know any of the specifics.

This is an article from over a year ago:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/harmonix-sues-activision-then-withdraws-suit-to-talk/

The court docs use the word "royality" and that usually implies a per-unit fee or cost.

And I know others have linked to the patent Harmonix has for its music-based software (http://www.uspto.gov/web/patents/patog/week49/OG/html/1337-1/US07459624-20081202.html)... it looks just like GH so one could infer it's still relevent.

It's not much of a war when RB is kicking GH's a** in nearly every catogory.

I kinda doubt they'd hope that with respect to a competing franchise. They'd make more revenue with a greater market share than they would by holding a smaller portion of the market share and getting small royalties from the other portion of the market share.

No, it isn't.

I think it would be the best thing ever if Neversoft debuted GH 37 at the same time as RB 3, and the two developers played each others instruments.

It would be even more awesome if bot the Red Octane and Harmonix guitars failed.

Yeah the war was something created by the fanboy/girl nerds of GH and RB. I play Rock band and it is my personal preference over GH but i still play GH:WT and am excited for GH:SH. DJ hero looks reli bad, but i wont judge Neversoft or whoever helps develop the game by the one game.
