Long ass thread title.
What bands are you surprised at that had a name not already taken.
Like the Killers, or Oasis, or any The followed by an animal.
Also, what about bands who took a name already used semi-famously before.
Like Nirvana, or Slipknot.
I'm bored.

Nirvana had been used at least 10 times (possibly more) before Kurt.
I'm surprised the name F*ck was free until the 90s.

Incubus was used twice. As was Sodom, according to last.fm. I'm surprised Creed wasn't taken, or it may have been idk and idc.

But that was mid-60's. Back then it was more imaginable. The only reason I didn't list The Animals.

I'm surprised Belly hadn't been taken when Donelly formed the band.(It sounds like a name that could been have easily taken in the 70s-80s).

The Butthole Surfers. It seems like a name 1970s punks would have jumped all over.

I don't know it seems a bit out there for 1970s punk rockers, imo.

Why are those surprising? Slayer wouldn't fit any of the pre-80s bands, besides maybe a NYHC band.
Master: Not taken by a (known) band until 1983, the death/thrash band.

there were several bands in the 70's with the name, actually.

Witch: J Mascis' Doom Metal band. They were formed in 2005.
there are several other bands (at least two from the early 80's) named witch.

I knew I should've looked into that... I'm lazy right now though... Still, surprised it took til the 80's.

I'd say all the "The" bands. Like The Hives, The Strokes, The Nice, and The Who. Any band name that begins with "The" is pretty cliche to me.

That was taken in 1971, that's pretty early. I couldn't see many prog, blues rock, or psychedelic bands taking the name "Death".

Yes.
Well considering Yes formed in 1968, it's not as surprising because it was taken early on. :)

Exactly. Think of when the bands were formed. The Animals were a '60s band. it doesn't surprise me the name was available.

I don't think many early punk bands were that simulataneously self-important and uncreative, excluding maybe the Sex Pistols.

The The.
Wikipedia tells me they formed in 79, but even that seems a little late for someone to come up with this one, given how many "The" bands there've been.

The The.
Whoever took that name is an epic win.
For bands not yet mentioned, I'm surprised it took so long for The Sword to be used. It seems like something a 70's metal or maybe an early prog band would have jumped on.

Black Sabbath was stolen from a movie.
Just because these bands founded an entirely new genre doesn't mean they were any more creative then anyone else in anything else.
