View Full Version : Sonic The Hedgehog turns 18!

Finally, Sonic the Hedgehog is old enough to vote and join the Navy. That's right: Sega's iconic video game rodent is 18 years old today, so if you fondly remember playing the first Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis, you're officially old.

In his long career Sonic has competed in the Summer Olympics with bitter rival Mario, defeated Dr. Robotnick many times, and collected like a million, billion rings. Sonic's game oeuvre includes classics like the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the Advance series, and Sonic Adventures as well as unfortunate missteps (Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 3D Blast, etc.). In fact, if you really look at Sonic's "career" you'll see just about every kind of game represented: Fighting games, RPGs, mini-game collections, racers, and just about everything except a first-person shooter.

To celebrate, Sega is running a contest to give away years worth of Sonic swag. Check out the site for more details. (http://blogs.sega.com/sonic/2009/06/22/sonic-citys-sonic-birthday-giveaway-tuesday-june-23rd-2009/)

All due respect to Sonic on his birthday, but do you think it's time to put the little blue guy out to pasture? He's worked pretty hard for a long time and must be having joint problems from all that running, so maybe he should retire. It seems to me all Sonic ever really brought to the table as a character was some generic "attitude" and the ability to move really, really fast. That was pretty innovative 18 years ago, but is it really enough to hang an entire franchise on for nearly two decades? There's something so rooted in the time about Sonic; know what I mean? If you do still dig Sonic, where do you see the character/franchise going in the future?

Is he too old to be let going on? Damn it all, G4 can kiss my rear. He's had two comic series and one of those is still running strong, so he's hardly the type that should be put down like Old Yeller.

It's more the fact that he hasn't had a decent Sonic game in years. Unless you count Chronicles, which apparently no one but me does.

True. But we have 2 or 3 years experience on you Americans (of legal drinking anyway). Combined with your weak watery beer....

Canadian Drinkers > American Drinkers

Not really. Amy didn't show up until Sonic CD, meaning she's still underage for a few more years. ;)

No. Their life span is usually around 4-7 years in the wild (Larger species) and i believe 2-4 years (smaller species, and in captivity they can live 4-7 years also).

I had my first drink before I was 21 ;)
But I'm not condoning underage drinking.
Also I prefer most imported beers anyway. (like Heineken and Corona)
Although I like some domestic like Sam Adams and Coors sometimes.

Or a mutant of some kind. They call him a Hedgehog yet his "Fur" or whatever isn't really spiky... like a normal hedgehog is.

Amy is only Sixteen though. She has to wait 2 more year before she can legally, well I won't go any farther.

Canada really IS awesome :D

And I was only referring to LEGAL drinking guys. Most of us up here have been drunk since about 13 years old, at least that's how it was when I was that age.

I would imagine that the Canadian kids are getting wasted at about 10 now.

Immortal.

Then you've never seen this. (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/494799)

With that out of the way, Sonic isn't immortal.
