Hey guys, I just got Rock Band for PS3 the other night and found myself playing 13 hours straight with friends, haha. Anyway, when I got home finally and started playing solo for a while, my guitar got stuck strumming up. What I mean is that the controller was constantly outputting the command for "up" on the d-pad or an upwards flick of the strum bar. When I exited the song and got to the menu, same thing. I couldn't select anything besides the top option in any menu because it kept jumping straight to the top-most option. I quit the game, exited to the XMB, and even in the XMB, I couldn't scroll down. The second I touched any button on the guitar, it just climbed to the top option in every part of the XMB. I tried replacing the batteries, I tried pressing the connect button on the guitar and the dongle, I tried restarting the game, I unplugged the guitar, rebooted the PS3, completely unplugged the PS3 for about 10 minutes... nothing seemed to work at all. No matter what I did, whenever the guitar was plugged in, it would act like you're constantly pressing "up" on the D-pad or strum bar.

Is there anyone else who's had this problem? I was about to smash the thing before I stumbled upon a fix in my frustration.

This may or may not work for you, but after a few times it worked for me, and I've played for hours since without it failing again.

Take the strum bar, and with a bit of force, strum up & down REALLY fast as if you're trying to play a crap load of notes in a row. Use common sense though, don't break the thing, but strum it a little harder than you would while actually playing. I did this for a few seconds and the guitar snapped out of its funk for a little. Anyway, after doing that a few times, its been working flawlessly. If anyone else is having this problem, hopefully this will help you as it worked for me. I'm guessing the contacts just got stuck or something. I haven't opened the guitar up yet so I don't know exactly how it all works inside, but that would be my best guess.

Anyone else out there have this problem? If so, do you know what the cause is?

Frustration got the best of me and I pull the back off the guitar.

It took less then five minutes to get all the screws out of the back of the guitar body. That's right ALL THE SCREWS!!! Do not try and half ass the job, take them all out. This includes the four that connect to the neck of the guitar. Other than those four do not mess with an others that may be on the neck.
There are three different screw lengths four go into the neck are the longest. Two other screws (just two) are the smallest, and the remainder are all the same length.
After you get them all out lay the guitar on your lap or flat surface with the screws in a area where they wont get lost, eaten by your dog or sucked up in a vacuum.
If you have a can of dust remover have it handy, and possibly really really fine grade sand paper ( I didn't need the sandpaper my self but it can come in handy).
After you get the back off you can view the wonderment of the shoddy glue job. More then likely what is causing the issue is a stray string or in my case 4 that get caught in the contacts. If this is the case blow the contacts free of any glue that will cause them not to make contact. Police up any strands that may cause a future issue.
The last thing to look at is the small circuit board ensure all the leads that are running to it are connected properly and not about to come loose like it was in my case with the battery lead.
After you have done all that spray the dust remover one more time for good measure and replace the back cover and give it a shot.

Hope this helps.

It seems as if in your case the strumming wasn't working at all. In my case, I couldn't get it to NOT strum. It was as if I was holding "up" the whole time. The fact that there's glue in the guitar like that is pathetic in my opinion. I'm gonna mod this guitar eventually, but with all the issues these things are having, I'mma wait 'till the warranty expires before opening it.
