View Full Version : Random Setlist's and DLC are ruining my relationship!!!

I love this game. I love everything about it. As the singer for my home's virtual rockband I've had considerably more time to practice my role than the guitarist/bassist/drummer (oh say.... SINCE I learned how to talk)
I've beaten the Vocal Solo Tour on Expert, I gots me the 100% on Expert Achievement for my 360 (albeit on the easy tune Creep) and I pretty much have chewed up Almost everything there is to sing in it.
Then DLC comes out every tuesday and I get all excited and toss my points to microsoft with wild abandon downloading all the packs I can afford.
And then my girlfriend comes over and picks up her axe and we start up a random setlist.
Long story short, 9 times out of 10 the DLC comes up and the guitar part is BLINDINGLY difficult, she doesn't recognize the song (not having as much of a love for classic rock as I do) and we bomb badly. The fan's flee from us in terror, frogs fall from the sky, rivers turn red, cats sleeping with dogs and all that.... (ok maybe not so long story short but you get the idea)
I turn away from our screen beckoning us to choose between restarting or leaving the stage to find the love of my life glaring at me for downloading YET ANOTHER pack of song's that feature 1 minute of singing and 8 minutes of face melting guitar solo.
I love the new content. I'm like some deranged Pokemon Trainer OBSESSED with catching them all. but my friends just don't got the fingers or feet to keep up with my (supposedly) golden chops.
is there ANYWHERE I can go to make a suggestion or beg or bribe the supremely Awesome makers of Rockband to add an Option to disable DLC in the Random Setlists?
Save my love life!!!

Nice post. XD
Yeah, I'm sure they'll get around to it sometime. If she can't play on the guitar, then maybe she should bump down her difficulty?

I agree that we should be able to flag some songs on or off for random setlist, not just dlc songs either. Some of the nightmare/impossible level songs can be real tough.
Does your girlfriend play on the right difficulty?? You can play on expert if you want, and she can play on easy etc.. I know that some songs, on the same difficulty setting, are real easy and some are very tough, thats probably the problem. I like to play hard on guitar and drums, but certain songs for each instrument are REALLY TOUGH, like the Police Next to You for drums etc.. Would be nice to be able to play hard or expert and not have to worry about metallica dlc or some other impossible songs coming up.

Perhaps.... but I'm in the dog house enough so I'm not gonna make the suggestion :)
What can I say. I'm whipped.
Also we're at the point where the lower difficulties don't give any more fans. It seems unfair that we have to shy away from some big fan rewards because I love having tons of extra music goodness. Especially since Random songs seem to be part of most of the High Scoring Multi song Set Lists.

Here is what you can do for now: go get an XBox memory card. Put the DLC on the memory card instead of the internal hard drive. When you want to disable those tracks, take the memory card out.
Alternate version: keep some Rock Band save data on the memory card, but keep the DLC on the hard drive. When you want to disable those tracks, turn off the XBox and snap the hard drive out of its socket.
Alternate alternate version: download the DLC on someone else's XBox (with your own Live account), and then re-download it on your own. On your system, it'll only be valid while you're logged in to XBL. Refrain from signing in to XBL, and it'll be disabled.
Of course, another option is to simply delete the content and redownload it later, but that gets pretty annoying pretty fast.
Edit: just realized you might be on a PS3. Can anyone here comment as to whether there's anything PS3 owners can do about this?

Am I the only one who was shocked to find out that the nice, poppy My Sharona had a blisteringly difficult solo come out of nowhere...and go on for over a minute? I couldn't believe it.

I don't think it's a good idea to allow you to flag songs to not be included in Random Setlists. First of all, they're random ;) . Secondly, you then get people who just flag GGaHT, Blackened, FwD, WGFA, NtY and every other somewhat hard song and breeze through BWT.
It's not like you can ask for fan requests, then tell them that they can't request X songs.

It seems totally fair to me, and perfectly aligned with HMX's vision of a risk-reward system.
Either you risk fans and play at a difficulty you aren't comfortable on all songs with but get a huge reward for winning, or you drop your difficulty for a lower risk and less reward.
I think this is the most fun piece of the entire BWT. Every random setlist we would all think hard about what difficulty we were on. Sometimes we would tease people for lowering their difficulty, and other times we would get in over our heads on RttH or Blackened and have to quit and try again. It was a blast though, and it would be disappointing to see people taking the easy way out by avoiding those songs.

Yeah! I had heard that the album track cut of the song had an amazing solo, but I had never heard it until DLC. Amazing, and surprising!

But it's not a fair risk and reward. The person who risks and plays Creep, In Bloom and Maps gets the same reward the person who risked and got Blackened, Next To You, and Won't Get Fooled Again.
If the venues would pluck out random songs that hovered around a specific difficulty level -- say, your starting city picks easier DLC like Jukebox Hero, and the unlockable hard-only cities picked Blackened -- that'd be fine. Then the risk equals the rewards. But the curve is less a curve and more a face first dive off a steep cliff.

I'm in a similar situation. I let my wife run the band that we're in together. She only picks random when 'she's in the mood'. Yesterday we got "Sick, Sick, Sick". She's never heard it before. We failed. Sometimes we'll pick random again. Sometimes we'll move on and pick the songs she wants to do. Our band might not progress as quickly as possible, but we have fun.

Is it just me or has no one realized there are plenty of options for fixed set lists or to make your own. I know my wife and I have hard time getting through the random set lists so until we both get better out our instruments we avoid them. This doesn't seem all that difficult of a concept to grasp yet there are a ton of people complaining about the difficult of random set lists. Seriously if you are not ready for hard/expert then stay back on easy/medium until you improve. Fans come easy later on so don't worry about the fan cap worry about your skill.

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind the difficulty jump when a song that came out of the box came on but, you can't deny that most of the DLC tends to be towards the Endgame difficulty of the song collection. Me and my GF can play through the entire game (sans DLC) on Hard and most of it on Expert as well, but some of the DLC she can't even get through on Hard (and she's way better than me on guitar)
Think about the odds of the game. As I get more DLC. Eventually the Face melters will outnumber the easy to difficult content and every Mystery Setlist will become an excercise in futility. Especially when we bring in friends who are not at ALL familiar with Music and Rhythm games who get beat on these songs even at Easy difficulty.
We all had to start somewhere, and no one should have to see blackened pop up on their 3rd attempt at playing this game.

That exactly the risk! You might get Run to the Hills, you might get Say it Ain't So. A better word for it might be gamble. You put fans on the line, and you either win or lose. It might be an easier win or loss, but that possibility of a more challenging risk adds suspense and fun to the game, IMO.

That makes a bit more sense. I think this would increase the complaints about playing the same songs repeatedly in the start of BWT. If you only played first-tier songs on random at the beginning then you would play nothing but In Bloom!
I still like the way it is right now, but feel free to differ.

I couldn't agree more. I didn't even start on guitar for my solo career b/c I have played enough of it on GH2 and 3. I jumped right into drums.
Now, I'm 1 song away from completing my hard solo career(iron maiden can suck my...) and I haven't even started a BWT band yet.
I plan on doing almost every song in BWT on hard unless I know I'm playing Iron Maiden, then I'll do it on medium UNTIL I can handle it on hard. Drum of course.
My brother has reached the fan cap stages of his "band" and he is now doing drums solo tour to improve his drumming. He can do all the songs on expert guitar except Green Hill, High Tides( I think that is the wrong title).
Practice does make you better in this game believe it or not.
Good luck though with your "love life" and the DLC situation. Have her do some solo quickplay's of the DLC before you do your BWT.

Thats why I have not bought DLC. I want to unlock all of the songs and complete all of venues. This is driving my son nuts(he wants the Metallica bad), but since I read about DLC appearing to often in the setlist, I have avoided it.

Any attempt to take out the "risk" factor out of Random setlists I think is the wrong one. If you don't want to take a risk, don't play those gigs. There are a TON of other gigs to play where you have much more control over what you play.
For me, this only really applies to the songs on the disc. I think the stracklist that comes with the game is very balanced, and random drawings from that pool are going to offer exciting risks without being over done. I do see the point of disabling DLC from the pool, only because a few wrong choices in downloads can extremely screw up your pool and make the Risk higher then intended. Especially if you just happen to be a Metallica fan.
But that's as far as I see it. If it's on the disc, it absolutely should have a chance of coming up. The "chance" of a hard song coming up is fun. If it's not fun for you, however, there's a lot of other options for you in this game.

Just to be clear, DLC doesn't appear any more often then anything else.
However, when Blackened does appear, you notice. That's all. :D

Here's the trick my wife and I use for tackling random setlists & DLC. She'll play with the level set to Hard when we get to pick the songs but will shift down to Medium when we are in a random scenario.
On random, it seems all too often we end up with a Metallica song or even Maiden, Outlaws etc. and she's just not up for it. By playing Medium she can get through it and not want to quit playing for the night. Keeps us both happy.
I love the random aspect of the game and love that the DLC has taken the 58-track game and made it about 80 and counting.

I agree. I just think you should also be able to stop certain on disc songhs from showing up when I play with a band.
Say with band one, I play by myself, and I don't wanna play visions, I can set it so Visionsa won't show up
If I play with someone who, say, hates Epic, I can disable Epic and Visions if want.

I'm so happy my girlfriend's the bassist and I'm the guitarist...she usually gets the easy way out anyways. Hell, she even surprises me sometimes...she managed to get through Hysteria on Expert on her first shot...after only playing on Expert for three days. I was like "...Jigga wha o.o"
Though if we ever get the misfortune of having one of the Peace Sells tracks pop up while she's here, we're screwed. Luckily, that only happens when any of my other friends are around...those had to be some of the most frantic, WTF-How-Could-This-Happen-To-Me-Followed-By-How-The-Hell-Did-I-Pass-That random setlist sightreads ever.

This is the one feature I am extremely for and think it's a mistake not to have in the game.
I've expressed it many times that I would actually buy a considerable amount more DLC if the option was there to block certain songs from ruining Mystery Set Lists.

heck i wish my gf would play with me more often then she does, she plays solo often enough, but it seems like whenever i hop on she's satisfied with me destroying the setlists (on hard). So take the good with the bad, tell her it's a way to challenge her since she's very good at the game (and like you said, not so sure if it still applies she's better then you at guitar.)

This thread is funny because I have the EXACT same situation. My wife plays drums, with me on Guitar. I've played my solo tour from the begining (never played GH) and have worked up to just having Molly Hatchet on Hard and 8 or so songs on expert. My wife never played the solo tour at all, and while she's good on the drums (can play a lot of songs on hard/expert except for the ones with rolls) she refuses to play the solo tour by herself. Thus we get into arguments where she gets a song she can't play, and complains that we should practice together. And I tell her I don't want to practice together because I can't play the BWT without her and thats what I want to do when she's there. Then I tell her she should practice by herself like I do, and she gets pissed off
At this point we've basically given up on the world tour and just do online play, and we don't fight about it anymore either :o

I am perfectly OK with on-disc songs always being available....
