View Full Version : Songs That Emotionally Drain You

With all the talk about songs that make you cry man-tears (they're made of lava, cause real men need to feel pain with their tears), what about songs that just leave you completely and utterly emotionally drained?
My examples:
Would? - Alice In Chains
The haunting vocals and guitar lines with a powerful bass line just chill me and make me just want to stop whatever I'm doing.
Coma - Guns N' Roses
My favorite song, this song's main riff and lyrics by Axl (in my opinion, his finest) build up an anger in me as I reflect on past things, where I just want to slip away, and then anger is released by the solo and (fairly epic) outro.

Disappear - Dream Theater
A song about someone passing away is always gonna be emotional, but the haunting sounds and James Labrie's voice just really makes it that much more. I've listened to it so many times that I no longer cry, but it still just touch's me in such a strange way. Truly brilliant.

the replacements - here comes a regular & unsatisfied
both tracks far too eloquently describe getting older and feeling worse and worse about it... there's really nothing more helpless/hopeless.
godspeed you black emperor! - BBF3
an undeniable force of pure haunting tension and cathartic crescendos... the field recording of mr finnegan's interview provides focus that makes an already incredibly emotional piece even more powerful.

Idioteque by Radiohead is probably up there. Thom Yorke's emotion in the song usually gets to me.
The entire Lift Your Tiny Fists album by GYBE, too.

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails just leaves me incredibly empty inside.
Also, Time by David Bowie is incredibly depressing in an existential way (especially the Rozz Williams cover).

The acoustic All Apologies on With the Lights Out. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SLRTheSbQ8) So much potential, sob.
Oh, and the acoustic Times Like These when paired with a video like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCx7cuCN9CY).

It's not MTV Unplugged. It's a home demo.

Oh. I assumed that you had no idea what I was talking about because I'm used to talking to people like that. Sorry, guy.

One by U2 always brings tears to my eyes, particularly the line "we hurt each other and we do it again". Also anything by Counting Crows has to be listened to when really depressed.

Give My Love to Rose by Johnny Cash is probably the single most draining song I know. Not the duet he did with his life...the single version he did when he was old and about to die. Heart rending.
Love, Reign O'er Me by The Who has a similar effect, although it's powerful in that it's so overwhelmingly epic, but somehow ragingly positive without being corny. Just an absolutely lovely, but once again draining, song, if only because all the power it gives you takes a toll.
I also feel like my heart gets punched in the face every time I listen to "Story to Tell" by Death.
