View Full Version : Great Challenge game I came up with for all elistist /or anyone really

Well after deciding how I could get the most of out my rock band experience I thought, nothing gets people more riled up than some competitive competition.
After having many disputes with the band "College Dropouts" I came up with a little game.
Find a band to vs against who is closer to your skill level in rank, and challenge them.
Each band picks two songs each and tries to get the highest scores possible on them.
At the end of the week, each band posts the scores they obtained and whoever has a total overall highest score is the winner.
: )
A.T.A. Enter Sandman & Suf. City
VS
College Dropouts Maps & Won't get Fooled again.
Each team will have seven days to play the four songs as much as possible and obtain screen shots of the scores!
I have come up with a program to input band member data, scores, ranks, to keep track of the matches and win loss ratios.
Let the games begin!
Comments anyone?

"Quick recap for those just joining us:
This system is planned to mimic the Battle of the Bands thing that happened a while ago between different gaming websites.
Players will specify the following:
A Contact Gamertag: ("Leader" character's Profile)
Band Name:
Band Member Gamertags:
Character Names for Each Instrument and Difficulty:
Lowest Difficulty in Band: (The Bracket)
For a Challenge, it comes out to the following (Example)
Announce The Apocalypse (Expert) v. College Dropouts (Expert)
Challenge Date: 12/11/07
End Date: 12/18/07
Song 1: Won't get Fooled Again (C.D.)
Song 2: Maps (C.D.)
Song 3: Enter Sandman (A.T.A.)
Song 4: Suffragette City (A.T.A.)
Bands would then post a picture with some form of date verification, like a newspaper, next to the screen. Winner is highest combined score after 4 Songs. "

Band v Band is always fun. :) But wouldn't scores be a bit lopsided if one team picks short songs and the other picks GG&HT and WGFA? Or do you mean each band does all four songs?

Great idea! Next chance I get I'll browse the leaderboards and try and find a band that looks pretty close to us. My band's "Those Meddling Kids", so if anyone has noticed your scores seem similiar to ours, PM me!
If you get enough interest, you should consider coming up with some kind of tournament format, similiar to what Scorehero did with their battle of the bands. Could be good times.

Epistemological Anarchy's in. Gotta give me a PM though, considering the speed that these things get bumped around on the forum with though.

Thanks everyone for the support! I've talked to Apples and if we can keep members interested and the post count up, it will be sticked and further help/ support will be contributed and worked on, to set up a Touranment sheet.
We'll post the results on Monday whoever wins, either way I came up with a great concept I believe, I hope everyone can take part in it!

Another thing to take into account is that you could theoretically actually use online bands. Just have all the members register their gamertags as a band, play on band quickplay over Live, take a picture of the end song screen and there you go! Who needs online BWT when you've got this??!!??
Edit: Very few threads do I subscribe to, but this is one I've added. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

This is exactaly what I was thinking the entire time.
Instead of dwelling on the negative, why not come up with an idea to promote the postive aspects Rock Band has to offer.

I agree heartily. Do I sense some kind of running "Season" thing going on? Look up the ScoreHero guys, they could be in on this or allow you to use their verification system, whatever it is.
Anyway, as previously noted, my guys are in on this one, we just need to get our Bassist secured.

I'm fine with this setup right now, but perhaps it would be better suited to a "Find some band members, create a band on a community site, and post scores as you get them" thing. I could probably have a site like that up in about a day or two (there are other things I'd like to do, such as play Rock Band :p), but it would definitely help us get around this whole no BWT thing online.

We can do this with online bands, you say? Awesome -- I've got my band together. :D I'm gonna have to tell my friends to watch out for this. Oh, as for who to challenge, though...that might be a tad bit tough as we don't have scores for all of our songs or anything as we're online, but I suppose we could work around that somehow.

Def. familiar with scorehero, and I was going to P.M. the site moderator and ask permission and/or what they think of this concept.
So far it is almost a green like on this forum, just need to spread the word to everyone you know and get them to comment!

It's pretty difficult for me to get a RL band together on any kind of semi-regular basis, but if I could find some people to put together an online band with I'd definitely participate in something like this. I've been wondering for a while if ScoreHero was going to have any kind of band vs. band league.

i think this is a good idea for people to have fun but i also think the song picking needs to be reworked as was mentioned before there are songs with higher total scores than others and to get the best scores you would simply grab 2 of the highest scoring songs, for example Green Grass and High Tides is the longest and highest score possible I believe, even doin badly on it could beat out a band that is better than them playing a short song like I think I'm Paranoid
my suggestion is that instead of having each band pick 2 songs each and getting high scores on thier own songs is that each of the 2 bands picks 2 songs and each band needs to get a total high score for all 4 songs(or 1 each for 2 total, whichever)

Please read the fine print.
I pick two songs.
You pick two songs.
We play all four songs. Each. I've already stated this.

I think you've misread - thats the whole idea of it. Each band picks two songs each and then both bands play ALL 4 songs - it just makes it fair with each band picking 2 songs each.

Thanks for taking the time to address my post, but I do understand that part and was questioning something else. :)
I understand how we can prove our scores but if I'm in an online band for this "competition" (Which I will be), how does our band choose who we play against? We can't use the career leaderboard to find a band similar to our score because we don't know our overall score, you see. I suppose we could play through, record all the songs and calculate it that way, but that'd be kinda tough. I'm sure we'd figure it out. :P
I was questioning more if there'd be a "set" or "standard" way for online bands to choose their opponents of equal skill. Any ideas for a better way to do it?
KingNuclear
12-10-2007, 08:42 PM
In a utopia of this idea, people would submit a forum of 4x gamer tags + the level of difficulty's they wish to play for and the information would be public and used as a guide to find your opponent.
Pretty soon when this gets up and running, I'm sure everyone will be posting their band members.

Meh, for being complete, just a worked out version of what Nuclear mentioned above me:
Epistemological Anarchy
Lead: Expert (Th*****)
Vocal: Expert (pvtGramps)
Drums: Hard (pvtGramps(1))
Bass: Hard (pvtGramps(2))
Overall: Hard
Something like that? The lead guitar's name's blocked cause I'm pretty sure he doesn't want me tossing his GT everywhere.

Exactly, then you agree upon with your rival if your going on for total score points.
or if your on expert, points + gold stars.

One thing I wanted to get clarification on. You want the scores to be obtained AFTER the challenge is placed, correct? If this is how you want to do it, I think you're going to need to have a way to verify the date of your screenshot.
For example, if me and my band post up a ridiculous score for Won't Get Fooled Again, if you don't verify the date, then we could just keep re-using that score over and over again for future challenges. At that point, you may as well just wait for ScoreHero for Rockband go live and it'll be the same thing. There's no actual competing going on, it's just a ranking for whoever got the highest score at some point in the past.
The exciting part about this, to me at least, is the idea that you have to produce a high score during your time limit. So even if you have some monster score in the past, that doesn't mean squat unless you can reproduce it. So a requirement to prove the date of the Screenshot would be a very good idea, if this is what you're going for.
KingNuclear
12-11-2007, 06:37 AM
Example:
A.T.A.
V.S.
College Dropouts
Challenge Issued: 12/9/07
Challenge Score Deadline for posting : 12/6/07 by 11:59 p.m. EST
Holding up a newspaper next to your TV, score on the screenshot will verify the correct day.
Attempting to use the same score for a different battle will be instant failure.
Thank you for your concern, and for bringing it up.

12-11-2007, 07:19 AM
A nice thing about this approach is that it actually makes it possible for a band on a 360 to challenge a band on a PS3. It also makes it possible to create a virtual band online and be a part of the competition.
The only thing that would make it difficult is that the two platforms can't see each other's leaderboards, but that would get taken care of after enough people have posted verifiable scores.
pvtGramps
12-11-2007, 07:22 AM
Yeah. I think that this will really take off after Rock Band ScoreHero gets up and running.
I completely forgot that we could go cross system with this, Desired! That's pretty awesome!
Not to mention, when the new community site goes live, they will hopefully have thought to independently combine the Leaderboards into World Leaderboards.

You should make different brackets for people who play on mainly easy/medium/hard/expert.

I don't even think you need a newspaper. For one, the print will be too small too read if you're getting a shot of an entire tv screen in. But, all you need to do is just write the date real big on a sheet of paper and have that in the picture. It doesn't matter that you wrote the date yourself because once you go past the score screen, it's gone forever. It's not like you can just bring that screen up whenever you want and put a new piece of paper next to it.

To add my thoughts on the longterm structure this can take, I think you have two options for dealing with skill levels. Or maybe a combination of the following two:
Tournaments: You don't have to worry about skill at this point. If you suck, you rank low. If you're awesome, you win. Easy!
Ladder League: These can be awesome, but take work. You get a basic ranking for the Ladder, maybe with a tournament. From there, every new band who joins the ladder starts at the bottom. You can only challenge within a certain number of steps from yourself, and you move up from there. The cool part about ladders is that they balance themselves. You'll eventually stop climbing the ladder, and presto, you're going to be neck deep in bands your own skill level. But a it all takes lot more upkeep in the long term. I LOVE ladder leagues, though.
For now, until you have more interest and bands signed up for this, the responsibility is on the bands themselves to find a worthy match. There's really no other way to do it until you start something more orginized.
Last point I wanted to throw out there. I'm not a huge fan of restricting matches to a certain skill. Half the fun and strategy I saw from ScoreHero's Battle of the Bands was which difficulty was used by each member of a band to maximize scores. Gamespy's articles on that exact topic were hugely entertaining to me. So I'm of the opinion you should find bands who are similiar in scoring potential, but leave the door open on who plays what skill level.

hahahaha whats up. this is the idea i wanted to make a long time ago when there wasn't much competition for my band. im the vocalist in college drop-outs and seriously guys, you're going down!!! ;) i think we might be getting together tonight to play the songs in a few hours so im really excited. whoever wins, its going to be so much fun. our band is so lucky to have a lot of local talent, we work good together.
Tuesday, December 11th. my predictions.
enter sandman - CD
suffergette city - ATA
wont get fooled again - CD
maps - CD
prove me wrong!!! we're good!
how are we going to do this? post at the end of the week? so like go with what you think is best? or lets say we do them tonight, should we post them up early so the other band sees what they gotta get to win? i say we wait until the day, or if both bands confirms that they have the scores if before the week and they post! because you guys will be able to see our scores either way because they are going to be #1 tonight ;) hahaha later guys.
Goodluck!!!

Tuesday, December 11th. my predictions.
enter sandman - A.T.A. ( If you saw the screen, we all know both our bassist will FC this, it will be up to the vocalist, guitar lead, drummer)
suffergette city - ATA
wont get fooled again - C.D. Your Drummer has that score on lock down X_X
maps - A.T.A.
Goood luck to everyone!
I say we wait until the day, or if both bands confirms that they have the scores if before the week and they post!

I refuse to even put in my Rock Band disk until Thursday because that is when everyone will be on to set some scores : )
****ALSO PLEASE ***
Bands take it upon yourselves for the first month of this to put in a little effort, find a somone to challenge and post your names, their names on here.
I'd love to the the ladder leauge, but as previously stated, I can't just come up with that from nothing :(
You put in some work, and I will to.

Pads broke... we are going to Best Buy to throw a fit, hopefully we get ones that work. I did suff city and enter sandman on practice last night and 100% but my pads always give me double hits and breaks combo's on the real deal. I'm not that great at maps, but voc, guit, and bass will 100%. WGFA, I think it'll com down to the singer...
If we get good pads from BB, we will take all 4. Just my predictions. GL.

Sufragette City is going to come down to our Vocalist as well I think... I'm only ~2k off a max score on that one (missed the last note, or else I'd be ranked #3 for it), and I know the guitar/bass isn't too bad. Enter Sandman is going to be very tight.
Honestly, no idea on The Who. I imagine we're going to need to play that one quite a few times, and my knee is already hurting pretty bad. I really really need a drum throne.

Did anyone post up youTube vids? Links please!!
