So what are your thoughts on this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnBEXTuUca0)
Not bad in my opinion...
Here is the new singer. William DuVall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_DuVall)

I was hoping bands like Sea Wolf and such were going to drive through contemporary radio and such this year, but I guess I could be wrong about the next change in contemporary music scenes.

I'm not sure that old bands should be popping in and out like this. If the pumpkins couldn't do it, I don't think alice in chains with a new singer can. That being said I hear that he sounds the same. I'm just not sure that, in this world, Alice in Chains, or Blink-182 for that matter can survive. If they sound the same everyone will criticize it, and if they sound too different their fans won't like them. Good luck to them both though...

Agreed! This is quite good. I'm liking the new singer, he's similair in style and tonality to Layne without sounding like a clone. When's this album dropping? Soon I imagine with the single out now.

I'm also curious about the album, I'm definitely going to look into it. Wiki says 9/29 for release.

Pretty good, but I don't think DuVall matches up with Cantrell well during the softer parts, he needs more grit during those parts. Cantrell's at full strength, so it's great to hear that the band is not coming back as a shell of its former self.

Its okay... I wish AIC would have tapped Rane Stone of the Seattle AIC Tribute band Jar of Flies to do vocals for them... he is almost like a reincarnation of Layne.

i was actually very surprised after listening to it, because i expected it to sound totally different than the classic AIC. the best part about it is that duvall fits surprisingly well, and at least in that song, doesnt sound radically different than staley, which in my mind is a good thing. as for the song itself, musically, its fantastic, cantrells riff is absolutely crushing and heavy, just the way it should be. so as far as the sound goes, i like it alot and im pleasantly surprised. however, i think the structure of the song couldve been better, because they seem to milk the riff too much later on in the song, and cantrell doesnt solo which is disappointing, so it didnt really justify its 7 minute + mark to me.
anyways, those are my thoughts.

That would have gathered a lot of criticism, from a lot of fans (myself included)
A clone from a tribute band? No thank you.
As much as I like Layne, I think they should use their new album to do something different.

Much better than I would've expected, and while I enjoy it, it's not quite up to par with standard AIC for me. I'll still give the credit an honest listen, though.

No, Alice in Chains is definitely grunge. Soundgarden's first album was pretty grungey, but the rest of their stuff wasn't grunge outside of a handful of songs.

Grunge is less of a genre and more of a scene
Most bands within a genre have a simular base of music, but if you compare, say, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, they don't have much in common (apart from being Seattle based and gaining mainstream success at the same time)
Nirvana really sounds nothing like Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam sounds nothing like Alice in Chains
Alice in Chains sounds nothing like Soundgarden
Soundgarden sounds nothing like Nirvana
While they are all listed as grunge on my ipod, its more like
Nirvana - Their songs are kinda lazy and sloppy, kind of a punky alternative I'd say
Pearl Jam - Their songs are typically slower and their instrumentation more precise. They are a slow alternative type band
Alice in Chains - More metal based, these guys have the most variety of any grunge band. I'd say they are an alternative metal band (yes, there is such a thing)
Soundgarden - These guys are a hard rock type band, heavy instruments, banging drums, Cornell's commanding voice. I'd say they are an alternative metal band as well, but in a different way than Alice in Chains

Ehh no, not really. Grunge is definitely a genre. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden really don't belong in the genre, outside of a few songs. Nirvana and Alice in Chains are most definitely grunge, just with Nirvana having a stronger punk influence and Alice in Chains having a stronger metal influence. Grunge was a genre, a scene, and a marketing scheme.

Nahh... I'd say a grunge band leaning towards the metal side. Buuut how would you define alt metal? I know a lot of people here don't consider that a genre and I tend to agree with them.

An alternative to metal?
Metal, with an alternative flair?
Alternative, with metal roots?
I don't know how else to describe it, seems kinda simple to me

What makes it alternative?

What makes alternative music alternative?
Sounds different than the Popular version?
Grunge is just a variation of alternative. Or a sub genre thereof. Not a genre all its own. Same for Alt-Metal, just a sub genre. I have to be honest, when i say, i get lost in genre classifacation, to me its just music.

Some say alternative has no place in genres, if what I'm saying makes sense. Grunge is really rock with heavy (as in a lot of) metal and punk influences. Plus popularity really shouldn't have an influence as to what genre a band belongs in. But alternative is fine for discussing radio formats and the like.

The problem with the whole Alt-Metal label is that I find it is used to describe a whole bunch of bands that don't really sound much alike.

I'm not big on the "scene vs genre", argument. All I know is that I regularly refer to certain bands as grunge, and that's enough for me :)

Nope, grunge really is a genre. You can't judge it off of the "Big Four" because two of the bands really aren't even grunge (kinda).
