View Full Version : Pissed Off a bit About Cover Bands

Is it just me, or is the DLC ruined by them all (or mostly) being cover bands :( at least for PS3. I'll admit some of them are dam good, but Ballroom Blitz is CRAP! Why didn't they use Krokus if the original band couldn't be used.
I mean, hell I'm paying $1.99 + per song and have downloaded almost ALL songs, the least they could do is use original tracks. It's just not right when I can sing Ballroom blitz to a tee and it's telling me I suck (on expert I mean). The words are right, but the guy singing it is wayyyy off, thus making us true followers way off.
Yeah, I'm just whining... ;)
PLEASE add more DLC that are ORIGINAL ALBUMS guys .... and for god sake start adding some real rock bands to the list... no more Fallout out boys and other **** that nobody cares about.
AC/DC
Led Zepplin
Dep Lepard
Wolfmother
BTO
Rush
Trooper
Helix
Twisted Sister
White Snake
Pink Floyd
Great White
Warrant
Nickleback
etc....
Get that sh*t going and I'll download it ALL .... I have money to spend, and I'm not going to pay for most of the crap on the DLC list now.
Remember it's the 25-45 year old people that have the money to buy this stuff... not the younger folks (no offense to the youngsters out there)... which I'm sure they would love to have the listed bands above as well.
rock on!

you do realize you contradict yourself by saying you dont want any youngster music, and then say wolfmother and nickleback (who in my opinion, OPINION, suck horrificly), right? and then to top that, you add white snake, warrent, and twisted sister, who at best are all one hit wonders. though i do agree with ac/dc, bto, rush, and pink floyd (although what can they use?).
theres nothing wrong with the covers done on the dlc's, or in the rest of the game for that matter (i happen to like the my sharona cover). plus, most of the time they do it cause playing the song would song odd if they left the master track in (especially for older songs).
and dont hold your breath for led Zeppelin (geeze, for such a smart older dude you got spelling issues), they never clear music, much less for a game.
~ Sincerely, a 19 year old who respects music from the older generations but acknowledges that not everyone is, and also realizes there are some new acts that are great.

What difference does it make if it's not the original recording? Does a cover that sounds 9/10 like the original really detract from playing the same thing? Seriously. BTW, when you get a cover, you're getting a much higher fidelity recording, which should help you play the song better.
Also, why the hell would you want Krokus' god-awful cover to replace the cover of Sweet's version? Maybe you don't like the vocals in the cover of Sweet's version - but that's the way they are in the original song.

Whitesnake one hit wonders? LMAO!
To the OP - maybe your points would be taken more seriously if you were a little more constructive with your comments rather than pepper your posts with unecessary rants and expletives. Whatsmore, I think anyone that's followed this game for some time will tell you HMX will attempt to secure the original track if possible. Certain things can prevent this, from licensing issues through to masters not being workable for the game.

Leo Stakes:
Whitesnake, Warrent, and Twisted Sister were not just one hit wonders. I am not the biggest fan but you have to give credit where credit is due. You weren't around then or maybe you were just an infant and don't remember those guys to well.:p
Oh, and please do not judge peoples spelling or grammar. Everybody makes mistakes on forums and if you pick apart everybody's post it will drive you nuts.

yikes!
was mostly just whining guys .... I just want to see original tracks... thats all... and Ball room blitz is a cover (not sweet) as far as I noticed. If I'm wrong, then Krokus just rocks them all to pieces.
Krokus, does american woman better to, not to mention a whack load more or great tunes.
I realize that they can't get a lot of licenses, but they could at least try to get some of the better bands first. (maybe they have and bands would just rather people download their music for free, duh!)
"you do realize you contradict yourself by saying you dont want any youngster music, and then say wolfmother and nickleback (who in my opinion, OPINION, suck horrificly)"
Yeah, but in the same sentence, they are the best you have nowadays
WoW, you hate Nickelback? That's really the only group I pay to see live. Closest thing you have nowadays to rock n roll.
I find it very funny that allot of folks have such varied opinions ... lol
anyway ...my point has been made and I will continue to rant until some better groups are added to the DLC (police? LOL .... that makes me laugh!) :D

Wait... there aren't classic rock bands in the game? Hm, I guess the Rush song, Sabbath songs, and Boston song I've been playing (among others) were in another game.
Wolfmother? Huh. That master track of Joker and the Thief must've been my imagination.
You're *****ing about problems that don't exist, dude. 90% of the music in the game is master tracks, and there's a ton of classic rock.

Trust me, they get master tracks whenever they possibly can. And I think for the most part they've done a good job with the covers. (Hell, the guy that sings the cover of Run to the Hills needs to get an award.)
And if you think the covers for Rock Band are terrible, I'd hate to see what you'd think about some of the ones in GH1 and GH2. ;)

Actually, the covers are improved over Guitar Hero, especially RB's version of Run to the Hills, which really sounds like Maiden. I would like to applaud the band responsible for that.
But the original versions of the songs actually matter to ALOT of people, and my roommate will not d/l the covers of Sabbath or any of the other songs we'd probably play if they were original. His system my copy of the game.
And yes, there is a semi-rampant amount of EMO/Garage/Filler crap in this game that other better bands could have been included in. I am speaking of course including Fall Out Boy, Ok Go, The Killers, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and etc. Especially Fall Out Boy. Godsmack, Def Leppard, Journey, and others could have been included instead.
And again there really is no excuse for putting Fall Out Boy in RB.

Of course there's an excuse. The game wasn't made for you. It wasn't made for the OP. It was made for the masses and to appeal to a wide range of people. The GH series is just the same. There's some absolute trash on GH II and III but that didn't stop me enjoying the game.
It isn't called Rock Band: Classic Rock. Its called Rock Band. Pretty loose term really.
Now don't get me wrong, I love proper classic rock, and the OP has listed some good bands that I too would like to see DLC from. However, I'd also like to see more Metallica, Pantera, Godsmack, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Drowning Pool, System of a Down, Muse, 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, Alter Bridge, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snake Pit etc...... but I'm not gonna campaign for it - I'm just gonna hope we see that stuff at some point.

I agree, however so far the only song that I've heard that I didn't like was Ballroom Blitz. The game IMO would be much better if there were all master tracks, but it won't hurt too bad to only play one bad song.

I'll just step in and say, as a long-time Rush fan who purchased their Vinyl in the 80s, the cover of Tom Sawyer sucks. It sounds like Edith Bunker doing Tom Sawyer reading the lyrics off of cue cards. Every time I play Quick Play someone chooses that song and I feel like dropping out because I laugh every time I hear it.
I don't mind most of the other covers though. :)

I think OK Go was included because...well, try playing drums on Expert. Its a lot of fun and you can really get into it. The Yeah Yeah Yeah also has nice drums and a good vocal part. The Killers just have that nice big sound people can get into. But yeah, Fallout Boy, yeesh..and thats really the first time I ever heard them was in Rock Band. :)

Unsuccessful Troll is Unsuccessful
I for one, think this is one of the best games that have the best sounding covers. Tops GHIII and does Justice to GHII. I'm almost taken back on "Train Kept Rollin", on how almost perfect it is. Its a pretty damn good cover. I was cringing when I heard it was a cover. But I love that song to death!
Sweets original beats Krokus' any time of the day. 'Nuff Said. If you want to play the Cover. Go play Guitar Hero II: Rock's the 80's to play a cover of a cover.
The CCR and Foreigner are pretty damn good for being covers. I was amazed on how well they covered John Fogerty's voice. Those are one of the hardest voices to imitate besides Steven Tyler, Geddy Lee, etc.
And some people like Fall Out Boy. I can tolerate them sometimes. But am I a fan? No. There's people out there that are. And HMX is trying to broaden your horizons with different types of music.

I'll second the complaint about Ballroom Blitz (even tho it's not DLC). Although it is better than the cover from Rocks the 80s. What they really should've done was gotten the Tia Carrere version from Wayne's World.
As for wanted DLC, I want to see:
JOURNEY
Def Leppard
Heart
Whitesnake
Rush
Pearl Jam
Muse
Led Zeppelin
That's just a start. But really, people? Wolfmother? Slash's Snake Pit? Come on...

I don't know what all the hating is about covers. Rock Band covers are nothing short of magnificent! With the exception of Ballroom Blitz - which is probably the second hardest song in the game to cover (right behind Run To the Hills) - all the covers are good, and if the singers voice is different, it does not ruin the song. People complaining about cover songs are lame because they don't realize that the songs wouldn't be in the game if they weren't covered.
I would love to see some of these bands, and I WOULD NOT CARE if they were covers or not! Just being able to play this music in Rock Band would be great. Don't go around saying that having covers ruins the game, because quite frankly, it simply doesn't. At least in my opinion. Maybe my ears are broken or something. Or some people have robot ears.
ACDC... one can keep dreaming right. And for Aerosmith, you can't get away with a pack without having Walk This Way or Sweet Emotion.

"WoW, you hate Nickelback? That's really the only group I pay to see live. Closest thing you have nowadays to rock n roll."
ha ha i went to a nickleback concert because JERRY CANTRELL, he used to be in a little outfit some of you may have heard of called alice in chains (who is also horribly represented on this game) opened for them. i saw jerry ... when he was done i turned around and walked out... and my group weren't the only ones. not to start an argument but nickleback does not have the spirit of rock. they are corporate dirivitives of a dirivites (to creed what creed was to pearl jam). That said though just because you don't like bands (mainly pop-punk) doesn't mean they aren't "rock". IMO Foo fighters carry the spirit of rock more than nickleback. You've just proven that people can have very different opinions of a word, but i don't see why you would try and stop people from getting what they want. honestly the game is a huge success and so is DLC so they are going to try and make as much money off of both as possible, meaning that they would make brittany spears DLC ( i know that makes no sense but stick with me) if they thought it would sell. They are definatly going to test the waters and see what will be popular. i got lucky, whenever it's realeased one of my favorite album's is up "Who's next" but i am sure metallica or pantera or some other "metal" outfit i'm not thrilled about will have their day (isn't metallica's next single going to be straight to Rock band?) . you know what you do? you don't buy... you pass until something you want comes out. that simple.
i guess all i am saying is wait your turn and you'll probably get the stuff you want. don't diss on stuff just because you think it's going to hold up your tracks. There will probably be nickleback DLC before any of the bands i like get any and i love bands that will never be on this game.

I dunno, I'm actually damn glad they put it in. Despite all the complaining people did before release, it's a pretty good song. Unfortunately it's hard, but oh well, can't have everything I guess. Anyways, if Dead on Arrival is representative of the band's music, bring on more Fall Out Boy!

I think whether or not you enjoy the cover is directly related to how big a fan you are of that specific band.
For folks like myself who may not have a prior familiarity with a band, the covers are great.
However, to a die hard fan, the cover may seem like an imitation, that cannot match the original.

The problem with a cover is when the sound of the singer's voice defines their sound and the cover singer doesn't get it.
Listen to Tom Sawyer cover and the original song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZru4JG_Uo
Now Listen to the cover:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFNKAyXfdp8
The problem is, you can tell that the cover singer is TRYING TOO HARD to match Geddy Lee's voice. It doesnt sound natural at all. He's over pronouncing the lyrics...Geddy Lee uses his high voice and it amazingly doesnt come off as whiny/annoying...the cover, unfortunately, exhudes a whine that just obliterates the song (for me anyways).
It's an admirable try, but I wouldn't consider it successful vocally. The music sounds fine though. Geddy Lee has a trademark voice that is rarely matched. It's like Karen Carpenter...I have yet to hear one woman who could fool me into thinking she was Karen Carpenter.
To be honest, Rush is hard...everything about their music is not standard 1-2-3-4 stuff. Even the drums on hard seems random. I wonder if they'll put Yes on here...that would also be extremely difficult and I'd love to hear someone try to do Jon Anderson's voice...it would probably be just as bad as the Tom Sawyer cover.
Other covers work though because either they have a really good vocalist who knows how to mimic the original, or they dont really try to make it like the original and it turns out to be a pretty good version of the song. I dont think the CCR song, Unfortunate Son is really one where the singer is trying to be John Fogerty..I think he's just singing it in his own way...and it sounds good.
