from their latest MySpace bulletin...

From: The Used (NEW SONG UP!)
Date: Jul 8, 2009 2:40 AM
Subject: YOU WANT NEW MUSIC? PLAY IT YOURSELF!
Body: I know you've all been clicking on the GET TABS section for the website wondering when you'll see some official guitar tabs from the new record, right? Well the wait is about to get much shorter. Soon we'll be rolling out new handwritten tabs for each song, once a week until September 1st, when the new record "Artwork" comes out.

That means the only way you can hear new songs is to break out your guitar, attempt to play the song yourself and upload it to TheUsed.net for the world to hear. Look for a new tab shortly...

Although I'm not a fan of The Used really I do like the concept. It'd be interesting to hear how people interpret the songs without having actually heard them.

Its very interesting what they are doing here. I wonder if they'll actually include lyrics and such. Maybe people could actually make their own version before the real version comes out. Very cool idea.

I'm guessing that is the theory behind it. I'd be interested to see if it'd just be tab or if it'd include actual music notation as well for folk who can read it. I'm sure that'd lead to much more interesting interps. Particularly with all the music gadgetry you can get for your comp these days. You could probably do a full band arrangement on your own!

Something of this sort has been done before. Didn't Oasis pass out tab books to street performers or something to get the music heard?

I don't think it was street performers, I actually think that was a pre-order bonus. Like, if you ordered Dig Out Your Soul online or something, you'd get tabs.

Never listened to The Used... but this is an awesome idea.

Cool idea. Although sometimes tabs don't notate the rhythm right, so it sorta depends on how it's done. Plus, I don't know if they'll put bpm and stuff on there too.

i like this idea, i'm going to grab these. My guitar has been sitting, unplayed, in my house for the past few years...

My guess? A drunken homeless dude will still sound better than what the Used would have done

Actually, this idea is quite brilliant. I've tried to play some tabs without hearing the song first before and sometimes you get something that sounds good but is still completely wrong. It'll be fun to try and see if I (and others) can figure out how it's played and see what they get out of it. I'm in.
