The Metal Thread

Being such a diverse genre with nearly hundreds of sub-genres, I thought I'd make a thread devoted to the whole shebang were we can discuss every aspect of this genre and recommend artists/bands to one another. Try to keep away from the more popular metal acts that almost everybody knows about (ie: Metallica, Nightwish), and post away.

Also, there'll be no quarelling over sub-genres or if a band is metal or not metal. I've decided that metalcore and nu metal are still legitamate subgenres despite how much they are hated within the metal community, so don't speak otherwise.



First off, a few doom metal bands which I have grown fond of recently.

High On Fire, stoner doom from California, fronted by metal god Matt Pike. Their sound is unbelievably heavy. Pike's vocals are quite harsh, and they suit the music perfectly. The drumming is pretty awesome as well. They have released 4 albums. My favorite song by them is the one below. I would say Death Is This Communion is the most accessible album.

The Sword, stoner doom from Texas, the first metal band I ever loved. They sound very similar to Black Sabbath. Many reviews have called them a modern day clone. Not as heavy as High On Fire, but it's up there. They only have two albums, Age Of Winters being the more accessible one in my opinion. The song below is the first I ever heard by them, and is still my favorite.

Well, Earth created drone. Earth 2 is, at least for me, the best drone album recorded. On the other hand, that's really the only Earth stuff that can truly be called drone. I feel like all the other stuff they've done is just not drone. It incorporates too many other styles. Sunn O))) could also be kicked out of the drone genre, as well, considering all of the ambience that's involved (especially with songs like "Alice", which is on their new album). However, the drone stuff they've done is, in my opinion, magnificent. It's amazing how much they've evolved since The Grimmrobe Demos.
