Name songs that stick out from the rest of the band's discography as "weird," and what makes them that way.

Sonic Youth - Providence: No instruments except a vintage piano and what sounds like guitar feedback. There's what seems to be a friend of Thurston Moore's asking "did you find your sh*t?" and saying he is calling from Providence, Rhode Island.

Soundgarden - Half: Indian/Middle Eastern sounding guitar riff doubled by cello, viola, and a bass with a wah effect, and very sparse drumming. Ben Shepherd (bassist) sings some indecipherable lyrics, in a strange voice.

The Police - Masoko Tanga: Sting mumbles gibberish over some peculiar basslines and jazzy guitar. Closes with tribal drumming and weird plucking noises. The song is said to represent the negative effects of drug use.

Masoko Tanga is a great example.

Also:

Pearl Jam: Master/Slave, Bugs

Depeche Mode: Pimpf, Agent Orange

They Might Be Giants: Fingertips (the first TMBG song I fell in love with)

Pink Floyd: Any Colour You Like

I believe the guy on the phone is Mike Watt, former bassist for the Minutemen

The Residents - Hello Skinny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krmowThBYUk)

Yup, and it was released as a single... even had a damn video, wow.

I'm trying to think of songs that stick out as weird, I have plenty that might qualify as weird, but not taken in context of the album/artist. Trying to think of ones that just seem to clash with the artist.

I love Half. I'd say Paranoid Android though. It's pretty much Nonsense.

Oh and another Sonic Youth example: "Mildred Pierce" sounds like a nice groovy instrumental tune for the first minute, then suddenly at the 1:38 mark, it turns into a noise fest with Thurston's voice apparently run through a guitar distortion pedal as he screams "MILDRED PIEEEERCEEE."

If anything, "Fitter Happier" is the oddball song on that album.

Sunn O))) - "It Took the Night to Believe"

Much more akin to ambient black metal like Burzum than the drone that Sunn O))) is famous for.

That entire album is though.

I laugh at the final track every time though, hearing the guy panick inside a locked coffin.

"Thurston! Watt! Thurston! It's ten thirty, we're calling from Providence, Rhode Island. Did you find your ****? You gotta watch the Mota, Thurston, your ****in memory just goes out the window. We couldn't find it in the van at all, we wonderin' if you looked in that trash can. When we threw out that trash, man, was the bag in your hand, did you dump it? "

I almost knew this by heart, but alas the mota has thrown my memory out the window as well. That's the Piss Bottle Man himself, Mike Watt. Best bassist ever.

i thought his dad was the piss bottle man.

He was, but he passed on the tradition to Mike, he's got it in his truck cab. Ooo ooo ooo.

Or is evan dando the piss bottle man? I don't like to think of evan dando in ways that don't involve chocolate, ping pong paddles, ky jelly, and leather scented candles.

Den Ständiga Resan by Opeth. Sure, it's a cover of a Marie Fredricksson song, but still... it's out in the middle of nowhere.

lovesliescrushing - "Hum Vibralux" - 30 odd seconds of distorted vibrator.

Actually, having re-read the thread's purpose I'm wrong. It's not that far outside of what they normally do. :D

The Talking Heads Born under Punches: the weirdest solo I have ever heard on the studio version it's from about 2:46 to 3:16 played on a synth I think

Pretty much anything past the debut by the fiery furnaces would be considered wierdo. They did a concept album about their grandmother's church choir. even their poppiest songs have strange effects and obtuse lyrics. I highly recommend.

Mellotron + Vox = "Weirdest song" for The Strokes
Still a cool song.
