View Full Version : Things You've Heard About Music That Make You Think

Ok, we need a thread like this. We need a thread to discuss the opinions of others, whether they be odd, intelligent, or just plain silly.
Post things you've heard about music that make your brain tick, it can be a forum post (but for the love of god, no referencing RB Forum members in a negative way, at all, but sources outside the RB Forums is fine (as long as it's a celebrity or a close friend/relative who you know would not be offended (or YouTube comments) you are referencing) if it's something that can be considered "stupid" (not an opinion), so something like "only singles are important to music"). But really, lets be above "stupid" comments and instead post a majority of intelligent or odd things.
Here's a few examples:
Intelligent: Rock may not be possible without Robert Johnson
Silly: Dethklok is the most brutal band ever (though this is up for debate).
YouTubian Comment: "i havent heard this song before, so it sucks"
Remember: No flaming other posters!

That was indeed VERY silly. It was even sillier of the OP of that thread to allow their 10-year old to play Cannibal Corpse on Rock Band, and then get upset about the lyrical content of a song called 'Hammer Smashed Face'.

Teens have always rebelled by being morons. Only a choice few ever do otherwise. I mean, you can claim that Woodstock and all these great things from the '60s were an example of good rebellion but for the most part, it was just stupid kids out there trying to get away from their parents and find a different way of doing things. All very well, but getting stoned, drunk and in trouble counts as acting like a moron to me if, like I'm sure many of them couldn't, you can't handle it.

I will, however, give the point that nowadays teens are led to perhaps more stupid actions by media propogation of ideas of teen rebellion. Example in UK; Skins, portrays lots of drug-taking, drinking and violence. I don't think everyone watching it is going to partake in all of these, but it does expand the idea of getting '****ed up' and having an adventure is great fun. It also portrays the likes of anorexia in a less than negative light, which was a little unsettling.

I was debating music with my stepmom the other day, and she said that she believed the singer was more important than the songwriter, which I thought was outright silly.
She then went on to say that "Any guitarist/bassist/drummer can be subbed in for. No singer can be subbed. He's the only essential part of a band." This, I disagree with, but I wanted all of your opinions on this.
JukeBoxHero
07-13-2009, 11:51 AM
I would say the song writer is more important. They're often the ones writing the music or backing parts for the vocals(a very important part) and the lyrics which those singers sing.
My opinion is this, a singer does not make a band, unless they write any of the music, lyrics/vocal melody, or has a unique enough voice to give the music a very important texture. Just because a band has a singer, it does not necessarily make it that singer's band alone.
Also singers can subbed, and while you could subbed the other instrumentalist, would they actually know the parts well enough not to make the band fall apart?

In the Clash's case, subbing in a new drummer and 2 new guitarists did not work.

Mall Punk IS Pop Punk
This isn't exactly something that made me think. It's just... wrong, but I feel like bringing it up here to maybe challenge it. I don't know. But Mall Punk bands (I assume it refers to pop-rock pushers like Sum41, Blink182 and others) have nothing to do with pop-punk.

They didn't, but pop-punk can be a flexible genre if bands as diverse as The Rezillos, The Vandals, and early Screeching Weasel fit under its umbrella.
