Yes, my friends, we need a pop thread. Too many of us think of anything with the "pop" label in a very negative sense. However, I, myself, like quite a bit of what I've heard, both popular pop (true pop) and indie pop. I think we should all discuss these bands/artists since we could all use some hints when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Now, to start off, when it comes to mainstream stuff, Michael Jackson, MGMT (not really pop, but whatever), Nsync, and, yes, Britney Spears are some of my favorites. For more obscure stuff stuff, I must say, I don't know too much, but Broken Social Scene, Ra Ra Riot, and Carbon Leaf are regarded very highly by myself. I realize that some of you probably aren't too keen on the stuff, but I think you should give it a try. Don't listen to it like you would listen to, say, a prog album. That's not how it's meant. When you listen as they want you to, it can actually be very enjoyable.

I'm a huge pop lover myself. Michael Jackson is great and I like a few selections from MGMT and N'sync. Not too keen on Britney, though.
A couple of links to some of my favorite pop tunes:
The Go-Gos - "Head Over Heels" (probably the greatest pop song ever written): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9nqCM8Ito8
The Style Council - "My Ever Changing Moods" (the second greatest pop song ever written): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJeP3mipHQY
Moby - "Porcelain": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Fcaro25Ek
Enigma - "Return To Innocence": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_ALElMLpRA
Fleetwood Mac - "You Make Loving Fun": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWFU1Yjyv5A
Heaven 17 - "We Live So Fast": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJQ6bzcDDh8
T'Pau - "Heart And Soul": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwrYMWoqg5w
Pretty much anything by Prince, but the Purple One doesn't seem to want any videos of him up on Youtube.
And of course, most of these artists have a heaping helping of other classic pop songs, especially Fleetwood Mac and Heaven 17.

Britney can be a bit tough just because her voice can be a bit annoying at times haha. However, I do find myself enjoying the stuff, not sure why. There's something about it.

I think the VU's pop days are fantastic.
The Zombies, Big Star, Michael Jackson, etc. all eschew any notion that pop is a negative term.

Always great to see another Moby fan on the boards! :)
Also, I can't believe these two great ELO tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSMx5YQ0a-U + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aix03KSesoE
Can't Get It Out Of My Head and Telephone Line, respectively. Gorgeous pop songs. Jeff Lynne is one of the most underrated composers and songwriters in the history of popular music.

Definitely! Dreaming, Denis, Tide Is High, Rapture, X Offender, Pretty Baby, I'm Always Touched By Your Presence Dear, Heart of Glass, and Call Me rank right up there with some of the greatest pop tunes, IMO. They had elements from a lot of other genres, though.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Vanity Theft.

Who have some decent pop tunes.
Pop, like all music, is good in moderation. I can only listen to so much before I want to dive head-first into a Cannibal Corpse youtube run.

Eh, I don't know my genres by sound too well so that's why I didn't mentioned them. I definitely think they're a great pop outfit though.

my favorite modern pop artists include casiotone for the painfully alone, architecture in helsinki, ovens, jens lekman, camera obscura, and the pains of being pure at heart.
slightly older material from the magnetic fields, belle & sebastian, and of montreal would also qualify.
