Replacement USB inline release dongle?

I need a replacement USB inline release adapter/dongle... do I need to use one specific to the Rock Band instruments, or will the adapters from wired Xbox360 controllers (for instance) also work.

If I don't need a specific Rock Band part, are there third-parties I where I can just purchase this, or do I have to buy a whole new controller to get the part I need?
