Obituary, Eyehategod, Portal and Pentagram are enough to make me go but theres two things: they probably won't come to the UK and I'm aiming to go to Wacken next year so I'll probably be left broke.

Just be prepared for bands to cancel. This year (last March) both Marduk and Pestilence canceled (boooo), but that allowed Bolt Thrower to play TWO amazing sets.

The year before that I believe Cynic canceled.

There will always be some disappointments (Atheist's set was cut short, for example). Overall it's a good show. It's getting a bit too crowded for me however. Fighting my way through a sea of black t-shirts, beards, and unwashed, long hair is for kids.

That's a shame, because I live very far away from Maryland. Would love to see most of those bands.

I take it you won't be returning in 2010 then?

On the bright side, they haven't announced the venue, so it could be moved to somewhere bigger than Sonar (even with the outdoor stage).

You mean the one sandwiched between the sketchy bar on one side and another sketchy bar/possibly strip club on the other side with the "Big Top" adult store on the corner? I love how that block has like 4 strip clubs, a sketchy bar, a subway, and a carry out/arcade on it.

Yeah, it kinda gets awkward when you're moshing with your friends and some random guy jumps in. I'm always thinking "Get the hell out".

I've never moshed with more than a couple of my friends. The rest were just others at the concert.

Again, it's fun if you're with an Ozzfest-type crowd, who don't try to punch you all the time and will stop if somebody gets seriously hurt or falls over. I would never mosh at a hardcore show (even some metalcore pits push it).

You all need some balls about the pits, man! Different style pits for different style shows, but they're almost always fun unless there's an *******. I just got back from a thrash/punk/crossover show that featured some hardcore dancing (real stuff, not the crazy bull**** that happens at some metalcore shows), and it was fun as hell. I'm only 5'8" so it's not like I'm some huge dude.

There aren't many better ways to work out aggression, get some exercise, get the adrenaline pumping, and listen to sweet tunes while having that much fun.

I don't mosh all the time, but for a few songs it's almost always worth it.

I hope this wasn't directed at me...in any case, my only problem with hardcore dancing is the high risk of taking a hit in the face. Also, it's important to note that pretty much all the shows I go to are melodeath and metalcore, so I get to deal with the "bull****" you mentioned.

I agree with everything else.

It was directed at everyone in different capacities. Sometimes the best way to deal with those HxC dancers is just to knock 'em on their ass a couple times. Or just get the rest of the crowd to circle pit anyway and run 'em over. :D

But at least you have the balls to go in pits. They really aren't that bad in most cases, and when they are, the rest of the crowd is typically pretty insane too. Everyone should try a pit at some point, as well as crowd surfing and stage diving.

Also, Pestilence was supposed to be there this year (2009) but they were a no-show because of Visa issues IIRC. I ain't holding my breath.

When did Converge become death metal?

Ahem.

The concept of MDF is simple: to bring to the United States the best and most extreme bands the underground has to offer. Never conforming to trends, or being limited by genre restrictions, MDF is a showcase of what extreme music, both new and old, is capable of. With an emphasis on diversity, the festival brings together the very best death metal, grindcore, thrash, hardcore, black metal, and experimental bands from all around the world. With bands from all over the U.S. and Canada, and exclusive fly ins and rare appearances from some of the most in demand bands from Europe, Australia, and Japan, the diversity of the lineup is only surpassed by the diversity of MDF's rabid fan base, who annually travel from all over the world for a weekend of fun and music.

Many of the bands are not death metal. Some of the bands that come aren't even metal at all (Weekend Nachos, who attended in 2008, is a powerviolence band, for instance).

Haven't had time to listen to the new Coalesce or Burnt by the Suns albums yet, but Minsk was worth listening to (but not great). Wasn't a big fan of the new Voivod or Brutal Truth albums, and most of their other releases (Graves of Valor, etc.) don't appeal to me. The new Rumpelstiltskin Grinder and Agoraphobic Nosebleed albums were pretty good though (about on par with Minsk).

Look for the guy hanging out with the other people from Philly. Unless I'm not. Which is probably a good portion of the time.
Look for the guy in black shirts with obscure bands on them. Perhaps with a hoodie and/or a denim vest if I feel like it. Wait...
Look for the guy with shorter hair (though by no means short in terms of modern guy fashion, think Alex Ovechkin length). That one will narrow it down more. :p
