I am planning to purchase RockBand for my PS2. I realize I won't be able to download stuff or play online with that version, but if later I were to purchase a PS3, would I be able to use the same PS2 version on it and access those features? Based on what I have heard, I am assuming that that all but the 40 Gig PS3 will play PS2 games.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

No, you won't have any of the online features as they aren't supported in the PS2 version, period. Additionally, given that the PS2 GH games have controller issues with being played on the PS3, I wouldn't be surprised if you had problems getting the PS3 to play nice with Rock Band's PS2 controllers.

If I'm not mistaken...the ps2 version of the game will have access to the GH controller. If I'm wrong, HMX please correct me.
If I'm right, you won't be able to do effect switches...but honestly, who has time?

Thanks Phane7.
I'm not a heavy PS2 user, so please forgive what is likely a stupid follow-up question: Will there be any other way of getting new songs other than downloading them or might I just have to buy subsequent versions of the game to get new tunes?

LOL, good luck trying to get an answer from HMX on whether a GH controller will work with their game or not. I'm guessing you'll have to wait til launch and take a gamble (or wait for some other poor sucker to be the guinea pig and post the results here).

I've read that the PS2 version will feature more songs out of the box than the other versions, but no downloadable content. No, there will be no other way to get additional songs unless Harmonix comes out with expansion packs or something for the PS2.

Some mis-information in here -
The PS2 version will connect its controllers via USB. It's been rumored (and it seems likely) that the controllers will be the same as the PS3 controllers and thus compatible, but there's been no official word on that. The only reason there are problems with the current PS2 guitar controllers on the PS3 is because they're not USB and therefore require a third party adapter that doesn't handle things perfectly.
The PS2 version of the software may or may not play in a PS3 that has backwards compatibility, we're unsure, but even if it does play, you still won't have access to downloadable content or online play.
There's been no word on compatibility with other PS2 guitars. Given that Harmonix made the 360 version compatibile with GH2 guitars, it seems likely they'd try to do the same for the PS2 version but I definitely would not count on it as fact until you see that people have actually tried it.
They haven't mentioned any other way to get downloadable content, and I don't think there will be a way.

What the hell. USB guitars? wheres the love? why make everything proprietery. use the standard ps2 controller port for guitars, and the 2 usb ports for drums and mic

obviously you have no idea what proprietary means. the PS2 controller ports are what's proprietary.
the PS2 controller ports are only found on a PS2. that is the very definition of proprietary.
USB is not proprietary. the U in USB stands for Universal, which is the opposite of proprietary.

I apologize. I was looking for the right word...and sitting at work, with my GM looking over my shoulder basically, i just used a word that came to mind.
What I meant to say was.
Why make everything USB? Some poeple might want to buy the stand alone game for the PS2 due to the low number of GH and RB players in their area, and without online play...this would be best suited for those who only really want to play guitar...seeing as I for one, play the guitar and drums, but guitar is my life.
Also, Proprietery...meaning using their own USB device...instead of the ever faithful PS2 controller port. I know that USB isn't proprietery, the A male, or B male. or even the mini (4 or 5 pin)...but USB can be a proprietery bus. Yes, U-Universal, S-Serial, B- Bus is a standard in the computing and gaming world...but thats on the A male end...whether 1.1 or 2.0. However, manufacturers don't always use the standard B, or mini connectors (sony did on the SIXAXIS...5 pin mini). Kodak is a major culprit here on a lot of their cameras. So its a universal, yet proprietery cable, meaning it can be used on any computer, but only the specified cable that will properly connect to that specified camera.

Our local video store had a copy for rental for PS2, we rented it as an experiment for compatibility of peripherals we already own. The GH guitars work very well, and SingStar microphones are also compatible. The Microphones even pick up the cowbell and tamborine parts, although I was told I needed the "special" microphones for it. I would most definately buy just the game w/o the bundle because we have 4 guitars and 6 microphones. My biggest question is when will just the drum set be released for ps2 or will ps3 set work?

HMXJohnlok has already confirmed that the PS3 instruments are the same ones used for the PS2. Drums will be available for purchase in Feb but you could always put in a request for a drum kit replacement via Express option, keep them and let your CC be changed $125. Only bad thing about that is that there is no guarantee your kit will include the bass pedal since some people have gotten them in the replacement kit and others have not. You might need to specifically call and request that the pedal be included.

if you bought the PS2 disc for $50 and then paid $125 for a drum kit that way, you'd be spending more than what the PS2 bundle costs while screwing yourself out of a microphone and guitar!

I know. That is why I think its stupid for anyone to buy the game by itself :p

I just bought the RB PS3 bundle and the PS2 standalone game to play on my PS2. The USB Strat and USB Drums work great! The GH2 controlers (wired and wireless) work great! I can't get it to recognize the USB mic. Mildly disappointing. Anyone have any experience with this?

Try plugging a regular controller in along with the mic. The mic has no buttons so you have to use a regular controller to navigate. I had the same problem. Now If I could just get my pedal to work, I would be the happiest person alive!!

It does not work. It is plugged into the pads, but nothing is recognized.
