I have been anxiously readng the forums on this site, and I find it very exciting to see that people are working together to improve (and fix) the problems with the drums and guitars for this game. No question - we all love the software and want to be playing the game (otherwise, why would be here on this board?) but remain frustrated with the inability to play as we thought (four people playing - bass, guitar, drums and singing) for the PS3. I remain excited about this game, and look forward to downloading more DLC when I have four instruments working.
A little background - I bought the special bunch at launch, and did learn days before the release that there was an anticipated problem with the Les Paul working on Rock Band for the PS3. I have played GH1, GH2 and GH80s on my PS2, and purchased GHIII for the PS3 becuase it provided me with an extra guitar for Rock Band - if I knew it would not work when I ordered it in August, I would have simply bought the PS2 version of GHIII and used my two working guitars for it. Granted, there were problems with GHIII and the PS3, but mine is now working and that disucssion is for another forum.
So, after playing Rock Band for several days I get the dreaded double strum problem - contacted Customer Support and ordered a new one (express shipping with the credit card). I waited a week - no word - made several calls and was told each time that "it would ship today" and kept getting no progress. Finally, it arrived 10 days later and it works - it appears to be the magnet version, and I have high hopes that it will not wear out. I read about how to change the piece inside to fix the overdrive problem - I made the adjustment and it works much better now. For a couple of days, I have even been able to have four people playing - the bass player used the original (broken) guitar and strums up (which works most of the time).
After reading about the potential fixes for the guitars on this forum and hearing from several people that they were allowed to "keep" their broken guitar, I decided to call today and check into this option. I called and asked my EA support rep (Kelly) if there was any word on the "patch" - she put me on hold and came back and said "no news". So, I kindly asked if it would be possible to keep the broken guitar and save them the shipping - after all, it was broken - then I could try to fix it. She said "no - you will be chanrged". I said thank you and ended the call. I then contacted EA to ask the same question via e-mail and got this response:
Unfortunately, if your broken guitar is not returned to our Distribution Center your pre-authorization hold will turn into a charge in 28 days. Remember, tampering with the guitar will void the Warranty Policy and you may be charged for any damages sustained to the guitar which does not meet the general issue. However, if you have anymore questions please feel free to respond back to this email or please visit our website and review our extensive Self Help Knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com). Have a great day!!!
Now, why am I posting this information - certainly, not to get flamed (which I will - we all do) but rather in the hopes that someone at Harmoix and EA will read this and add it to the pile of people that are exteremely excited about their great game but having trouble playing it. I have two options to play with four people and both are blocked - I could get the patch and use my Les Paul or EA/Harmonix could allow me to keep my broken Strat and break it open and try to "fix" it with the suggestions posted here on the forum (something I don't want to do if I'm going to return it). Well, now I have posted my thoughts and here's hoping we'll have some good news in the next day or two.
