Assuming it's the same on the PS3 as the XBox 360:

Band "quick play" -- up to 4 people connect and just play songs. Not sure if individual performances here are reflected on the leaderboards. You can invite particular people to join you, or you can have the game randomly fill out your band. You can start with fewer than 4 people (and often have to start without a vocalist -- people are shy). The 4 people can have different difficulty levels.

Tug-of-War: exactly 2 people on the same instrument (any instrument) and same difficulty level toss the song back and forth and try to pull the crowd's attention back and forth. In this kind of match, there's a cap on how much of a lead you can get over the other person, you you have to keep playing well all the way through. Available in ranked and non-ranked forms. Non-ranked, you can invite friends and pick songs. Ranked, it tries to match you against someone you have a 50/50 chance to win against, and the song is random.

Score battle: exactly 2 people on the same instrument and same difficulty level play the whole song all the way through. High score wins. You can build up a comfortable lead at the beginning of the song and then you'd have to screw up pretty badly to win. Also, available in both ranked and non-ranked forms, as per tug-of-war.

At this point, the leaderboards on the PS3 side are pretty rudimentary: you can get individually ranked for any song, any instrument that you play offline, whether you play in the Solo Tour or in Quickplay (Quickplay is the only way to get ranked for playing solo bass) and you get ranked for score, no matter what difficulty you play at. In some instances, my rank is based on my High score since I did better maintaining a streak than I did in Expert.

For your band, the entire band score is counted when ranking you, so if you play with a two-player band, you'll have a very hard time breaking into the higher ranks. Performances in either Band Quickplay or Band World Tour may be ranked.

(I'm not sure whether individual instrument performances are also ranked on their respective boards. I wouldn't think so, because that would really be shafting the solo players, who have no chance in the world of getting their multiplier up to 4x and then having an 8x band overdrive multiplier applied on top of that instead of the normal single-player 2x solo overdrive multiplier.)

I don't know of any ranking schema for online play, since online Band Quickplay is done in a pick-up fashion. The only way I can believe they'd rank it would be by assigning the final score to the band Leader.
