The Battle of two very popular, and fairly similiar cartoons.

But which one do you prefer?

I know some of you may prefer something like King of the Hill, South Park, or American dad more than those two.

But out of these two, which is better?

I myself like the Simpsons more.

While both Family Guy and the Simpsons have declined in the past seasons, no cartoon beats the Simpson golden age (early to late 90's). Not even South Park.

Family Guy was funny when they started and were just pushing the line. Then they came back and figured they could get away with anything, and now it just jumped the offensive line and kept running.

The Simpsons was great in it's heyday, but is starting to run long in the tooth, should have finished quite some time ago.

The Simpsons, no contest.

The funniest episodes of Family Guy, like the top 3-5, are funnier than any other cartoon I have ever seen, hands down. But on average, episode for episode, I think golden age Simpsons was funnier. However, nothing on The Simpsons has ever made me laugh harder than the episode of Family Guy with the Fat Guy Strangler when Brian throws the TV and it starts orbiting around Peter. I had to pause the show because I was laughing so hard I totally missed what came next.

Futurama is a much better show than Family Guy. FG is decent in some episodes, like the one where Mort sees what he thinks is a toilet and ends up with Stewie and Brian in Poland on the start date of WWII, but otherwise is pop-culture reference after pop-culture reference show after show.

However, I think it should go Classic Simpsons>Futurama>New Simpsons>Family Guy.

Family guy has as much of a story line as The Simpsons, the claim that The Simpsons has more of one is ridiculous.

At the end of the day, both cartoons tend to almost completely start over as if nothing happened last episode.
Except in rare cases, for BOTH shows.

All of those movie-based flashbacks in Family Guy and a good deal of sketches in Robot Chicken are heavily influenced by The Critic. Also, The Critic is one of very few (maybe only) shows where Ebert & whoever (was it Roeper at that time?) guest starred. :D

I would argue that neither of them have a story line.

They both pretty much start over for the next episode. It's very rare that actual occurrences carry over. But both shows have had it happen a few times.
Such as Skinner/Krabappel relationship and Bonnie having her baby.

Der_Lex

Neither show has a storyline that continues over several episodes, except for two-parters like Who Shot Mr Burns on the Simpsons and Brian going to Hollywood on Family Guy.

The plot for an episode tends to be a bit more coherent in the average Simpsons episode, though. Since it came back from cancellation, Family Guy seems to have put plot in the back seat and is pretty much a collection of pop culture references and 'Remember when's. Of course, Simpsons has been guilty of that more and more as well.

Personally, I'd consider both shows past their prime. But when I compare the glory days of the Simpsons (seasons 2 to 7) to the glory days of Family Guy( seasons 1 to 3), Family Guy is definitely the lesser show for me.

I think that's more of a "sound bite" type response than actual reality.
I will, first of all, state that I prefer South Park.

That being said, when Family guy FIRST returned to the air, this was a truth.
However, I think that died in the same season. Of course they still do it, but not to ANY degree of what people say.

I'll cite an example of what I mean by "sound bite" response from my own life.
When my friend Dustin first came over my house, there were two times in a row that I had "cheez it's" in my room. [Probably same box]
Therefore he makes this reference to me "always eating cheez it's."
Reality is, I almost never do.

We tend to do generalizations like that though.

I'll have to admit that I haven't seen anything beyond season four yet (Europe is always behind on things, and I only go out of my way to download a few shows that I really like. With most I wait for a European DVD release), but I do feel that all of season four suffered from 'too many references' syndrome. The thing is that the references can be really funny with the right joke behind them, but in season four they really started to just throw famous characters or lines in there without an accompanying joke, and that wasn't really funny.

I also have to admit that I don't like South Park much. Season one was all right, but after that it simply didn't held my interest. In my opinion, Trey and Parker spend too much time preaching and slamming celebrities they don't like and not enough time actually being funny. It's a shame, because they are capable of some really funny stuff (the Imaginationland episodes were pretty good).

It's okay though, you have your opinion... we both know you're wrong. ;):D

'We both'? Developing multiple personality syndrome all of a sudden?

I'll just leave you two to talk amongst yourselves, then. :D

I haven't been keeping count but it seems like Family Guy has been using less pop culture references lately. However they have been way overusing the Stewie g*y jokes and in my opinion their most recent season was the worst. As far as best of the animated shows going by the whole span of the show I would rate 1. Simpsons 2. South Park 3. Family Guy

Eh, they make pop culture references constantly every episode sometimes they're dumb, and sometimes they get a laugh out of me.

I'm currently watching one where they made fun of the Honeymooners.
That got a chuckle out of me.

Out of the three you listed.
1. The Simpsons
2. Family Guy
3. South Park

This shouldn't even be a discussion, Family Guy sucks and the Simpsons is 2nd only to Seinfeld as the greatest show of all-time
God, I hate Family Guy, it's so stupid

The Simpsons by a landslide. Family Guy could never even come close to touching the golden years of the Simpsons (seasons 3-8).

Am I only the only one who enjoys the new Simpsons episodes?

Don't get me wrong, the episodes from the 90's are better. But the new ones still make me laugh.

Nope, I'm with you.

I liked Simpsons for the first maybe 6 or 7 seasons, but I don't bother to watch it anymore.

I've never liked Family Guy

EDIT: "Married With Children is better than both of them".... haha, I couldn't agree more

Why does everything always have to be a competition? Other than some similarities in the premises of the two shows, they're nothing alike really. This whole feud between the two shows is pretty overblown. There is room for both shows.
That said, I'm writing in Futurama for better than both of them.

Lets see the similarities:

Animated
Comedy
Family of 5
Overweight and dumb husband
Thin and smart wife
Nerdy daughter
stupid son
Baby
Dog
Husband goes to the Bar and drinks with friends
The episode starts at a random place which sets up the main plot

I'm sure there are more.

It looks like Family Guy ripped off the Simpsons! Also Bart isn't stupid he just needs to apply himself more.

There have been several stories that Family guy has copied from the Simpsons as well. Just search youtube.

Yeah I know I was being serious when I posted that it was a rip-off of the Simpsons. I still like some older Family Guy but it's not even close to the Simpsons.

Nothing on television will ever equal the 12-15 years in which the Simpsons was in it's prime... nothing.

So in comparison, as far as I'm concerned Family Guy can s**k it!
