Classic Rock for Metallica?
they were around for a long time. their best album was in like the 80's. thats pretty much what im talking about.
Meallica was also one of the highest selling bands. Metal is rock too, you know.
those were really just opinions i put in there. i'l remove em if it bothers you so much.
U2+Metallica are out of the running because of negative votes.
next time just freakin vote.

Aerosmith? Surely they are up there, and definitely within the timescale. They formed 1971 and were a huge influence to a lot of bands. And GNR? Although they probably aren't classed as classic rock, more hard rock. I dunno. Or are they too late for the era? Seen as Appetite was actually released in 1987 (if memory serves).

Wait, but what about:
Oasis
If you're not going to let bands like Radiohead and Blink-182 on, you definitely shouldn't let Oasis on.
