View Full Version : Cool album names?

willdabeast21

Yeah, I started a thread a while ago about good album covers, and it got on pretty good, so I started thinking, what about the name of the album
We aren't talkin' self-titled here, were talking albums with cool/weird/awesome names.
Some of my favorites include -
Type-O Negative's The Origin of Feces, that's just great in so many ways
Pantera's Cowboys From Hell has always been a favorite of mine
Dream Theater's Greatest Hit...And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs is pretty good
You also can't say no to Appetite for Destruction
Megadeth's Peace Sells...But Who's Buying is my favorite Megadeth name, though I always like their album names
Call me Canadian, but I like The Tragically Hip's Road Apples quite a bit
And finally, Frank Zappa's Weasels Ripped My Flesh

I'll add more when I remember them
Thoughts?

Edit - I'd also like to include -
Modest Mouse's This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About
Dinosaur Jr's You're Living All Over me
Arctic Monkeys' Who the **** are the Arctic Monkeys?
Eagles of Death Metal's Death by Sexy
I Set My Friends on Fire's You Can't Spell Manslaughter Without Laughter
Strapping Young Lad's No Sleep Til Bedtime
Mclusky's The Difference Between Me and You is That I'm Not on Fire

Every single Modest Mouse album title is pretty great.

This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About
The Lonesome Crowded West
The Moon & Antarctica (not really that great, but still)
Good News For People Who Love Bad News
We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Even their EPs have some great names:

Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks
The Fruit That Ate Itself
No One's First And You're Next
Sad Sappy Sucker
Building Nothing Out Of Something.

Admittedly the last two are compilations and not EPs, but still great names.

Some of my other favorites:

Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret
The Flaming Lips - Hit To Death In The Future Head
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People

And of course, Cap'n Jazz's "Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over."

Cool, right? OK
(IMO of course)

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Shinedown - The Sound of Madness
Motion City Soundtrack - Commit To This Memory
Linkin Park - MMM...Cookies: Sweet Hamster Like Jewels From America!

The Linkin Park one comes from their Fanclub (Linkin Park Underground) and that was this years release. It has nothing to do with Linkin Park, all it was was Chester and Mike goofing around in the studio making weird songs.

that's all I can think about right now :)

Too much "What's in my CD Visor Right Now" in this thread.

It's hard to describe what makes an album title cool. Depends on the who, what, and when.

I've seen some good examples in the thread:

Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
Devo - Question: Are We Not Men? Answer: We Are Devo!
Frank Zappa - We're in it only for the Money
GYBE - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
NOFX - Punk In Drublic
Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols

You need one or more of clever, self-referential, thematic, memorable; all without it looking dated 10 years after the fact.

Some others of note not yet mentioned:

Butthole Surfers - Electriclarryland
Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell
Filter - Title of Record
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
Joe Walsh - You Bought it, You Name it
New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
Powerman 5000 - Tonight the Stars Revolt!
The Propellerheads - decksandrumsandrockandroll
The Who - The Who Sell Out
Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants
Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

The albums themselves aren't necessarily good, but the titles sure are. That's what you remember.

I'm not sure if these were mentioned but:

If Guns Are Outlawed, Can We Use Swords? - Attack Attack!

Terrible bands, funny album names. :p
