Drum malfunction or what?

I just received my Rock Band 2 special edition yesterday and I hooked it up early this morning. Naturally, I was going to test out the drum kit first but I noticed when I was doing the 'Sound Check', everytime I hit the blue drum head, the pedal would register as a kick and vice versa... So everytime I tried to use just the pedal to play a bass note, it would come up as me playing the blue drum head as well.... Is this a defective drum kit? Defective drum pedal? Or can I easily fix this...?

It's a defective drum kit. Contact EA for a replacement since you're still under warranty.
