View Full Version : Would You Like The PS3 Fender Start To Be Compatible With PS2 Guitar Hero Games

I'm just curious to see how many other people might be in the same situation. Anyone that got Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero 2 for the Playstation 2 and then got a Playstation 3 knows the woes that followed; the games worked fine, but the wired Gibson SG wouldn't work with the now wireless PS3. A 3rd party manufacturer named Pelican created a PS2 USB adapter that allowed some functionality of the old Gibson SG controllers, but hammer ons and pull offs no longer worked, and star power could only be engaged by pushing the select button.
In short, people that adopted Guitar Hero early on the Playstation 2 then moved onto the Playstation 3 had to keep their PS2s around if they wanted to continue to play GH1 and GH2 with any proficiency. This will also be the case with Guitar Hero II Encore: Rocks The 80's.
Now we have Rock Band coming out for the PS3, and with it, a new wireless Fender Strat controller as well as Guitar Hero III coming out on both the PS2 and PS3. Over at Guitar Hero, there's still no word on whether the PS3 Les Paul will be compatible with PS2 Guitar Hero games. How would you feel about the Fender Strat being backwards compatible with the original PS2 Guitar Hero games? Is this something that people see as a welcome feature, or is there no point in revisiting the past, just let GH1/2/80's on the PS2 stay there?
Personally, while I'm willing to keep my PS2 around to play the earlier Guitar Hero games if I have to, I'm sort of hoping that either Neversoft/Red Octane/Activision, or Harmonix/MTV/Electronic Arts will do something to finally sever what I'm sure is the final umbilical cord to the PS2 for many Guitar Hero fans.

Just a quick update for those who made the leap from the PS2 to PS3. After asking around the Guitar Hero forums, I got referred by an Admin to thread asking a similar question about Guitar Hero III's PS3 controller working with past Guitar Hero games. This is the answer I got back:
To answer your question, the GH3 controller has been tested for the following:
GH1 (PS2) - 100% functionality
GH2 (PS2) - partial functionality
GH Encore (PS2) - partial functionality
You definitely want to keep your PS2 around in order to play some of the GH titles.
So there you have it. Even Neversoft/Red Octane haven't licked it completely.

I hope they work it out so it works.
I wonder what exactly isn't working..

Actually, I have one nasty theory about that, but I don't even like thinking about it; depending on how opportunistic the Neversoft/Red Octane/Activision business people are, they could simply sell PS3 owners the songs again as downloadable content, the same way they're selling GH1 songs to Xbox 360 owners. I'd hate to think that's what's going to happen (though admittedly, having Bark At The Moon or Cowboys From Hell with a practice mode would be nice) but from a business perspective, it would make a lot of sense; why spend money on backwards compatibility when you can MAKE money just selling the songs over again?
