I got a replacement Rock Band guitar in the mail today. When I opened the shipping box I was interested to see a big green sticker on the PS3 Guitar box that said "PS2 Compatible"

So I would submit that the PS3 guitar does indeed work on the PS2.

Which means it's a logical assumption that the PS2 instruments and the PS3 instruments are cross compatible.

I have not tested it since I don't have RB for the PS2 but it's promising!

Interesting. I'd love a picture if you can throw one up somewhere. Also, anyone seen this on the drums?

Well, since the sticker said the guitar was PS2 compatible, but nothing said that the game works with PS2 guitars, I wouldn't jump to that conclusion...

PS3 plays PS2 games, but PS2 doesn't play PS3 games. What makes you think the PS2 would recognize the PS3 guitar? I test it before makig that assumption.

Thanks man! Assuming the drums are cross-compatible as well, I'll probably get the PS2 bundle even with the gimped features.

If they sent you this as a replacement, I would agree it's safe to assume this is the model they'll be using for both the PS2 and PS3 from here out.

I hope so. My brother is still stuck with a PS2. I would really like to be able to bring my guitar to his house over Christmas and play Rock Band with my PS3 guitar on his PS2.

I'd lug the PS3 Bundle with me if I wasn't flying there. I don't trust some ham-fisted baggage handler with my PS3 and I don't want to pay shipping for 20 pounds of hardware!

If the PS2/PS3 controllers turn out to be cross compatible, thats a nice boon for those who want to buy now and upgrade to a PS3 later.

I read an official announcement to that effect somewhere. PS2 and PS3 instruments are cross-compatible. PS2 bundle comes with a USB hub and a USB to PS2 controller connector adapter. You plug the USB adapter into the PS2 controller port, connect the hub to the adapter. You plug the instruments into the hub. You can do this with a PS3, of course, if you have a hub and are short ports for whatever reason. You just plug the RB Strat USB wireless transceiver into the hub on the PS2, instead of directly into a USB port as on the PS3.

Why would you need the usb to ps2 adapter? Are the USB ports on the PS2 not good enough?

You need up to four ports, and most PS2's that I know of only have 2.

Edit: NM, read that wrong. Didn't realize he put an extra adapter in there in addition to the hub.

As far as testing it on the PS2 version, people aren't going to just go buy the PS2 version when they already have a different version of it just to appease us :P.

I'd LOVE to test this - but since I don't have Rock Band for the PS2 I can't quite test it, and I'm not going to buy it just to do it.

The soonest I'll be able to test it is December 28th when I go to Florida to visit my family. By then there will be SEVERAL people with the PS2 bundle who will verify whether or not this works.

Did the original PS2 have USB ports on it? Woah, I guess it did. How time flies. My daughter closed the disc drawer on my launch-ish PS2 with her feet too many about two years ago, so all we have left in PS2s is the slimline. But, yeah, of course; the Logitech headset was USB for PS2. So of course it had them. The slimline dropped the FireWire port, I think -- I haven't really ever noticed; I never used it on the original; it never really had a use, so that's why it was dropped I suppose -- dropped the expansion bay used for the HD, integrated the network port, but the original always had two USB ports.

So anyway, yeah, no adapter included. Hub ships with the RB PS bundle because there are only two USB ports on one model, and all the PS2 instruments are USB, too, and what I read about cross-compatibility announcement still accurate.

Yeah, no, sorry, I'm not going to go buy the PS2 version to test it for certain, but I swear I read the compat. info in an EA/MTV/Harmonix press release.

But here's one for you: Has anyone test the USB RB Strat to see if works with old versions of GH. I can't imagine it will as they were designed for controller-port input. But just a thought.

Yeah I tried this when Rock Band first came out. The USB ports on the PS2 do not seem to power up unless the software running expressly asks for them to.

I noticed this seems to be the case on the PS3 when it is playing a PS2 title as well. My guitars will be connected to the dongles on the PS3 and the moment the PS2 software initializes the dongles go dead.

I doubt it's even something that Sony could update in the PS3's backward compatibility mode. The PS2 simply doesn't use the USB ports unless the software wants it to.

EDIT: I did a little reading and it seems that the USB ports on the PS2 only support a limited feature set for specific devices. And then they only seem to work if the software requests the port to be "open". The only things I found were things like USB Keyboards/Mice for the Final Fantasy MMORPG, Headsets/mics for SOCOM/Singing games and USB Flashdrives for things like the Action Replay/Gameshark.
