Say I wanted to chart a few songs using the purchased software, but have no desire to upload it into the marketplace. Would I be able to transfer the songs onto my own copy of RB without uploading them?

Yes, but you would only be able to play them in Audition mode, meaning the song is not saved to your console and you can't play it in quickplay

You can, but you still require to have a valid XNA membership along with XBL Gold. Both of these are required to actually transfer said song to your Xbox 360.

Audition mode? What's that?

Audition Mode is what you use to test your songs before you submit them to the Creators Club for review. Think QA tools like autoplay and Overdrive functions to make sure that nothing is broken.

Ah right.

So does that not mean there's a loophole i.e. what's to stop someone from using Audition mode to play copyrighted songs?

Nothing really, but it wouldn't be official and you would have to individually transfer each song from your computer as you play.

As long as its not submitted to the Creators Club, there's no harm. You still have to have the $99 a year XNA subscription to even access it. Not to mention that you need proper split master tracks to compile your song before it even gets to the console.

Ah, so each instrument has to have its own track to be charted?

Yes. You can't just take any MP3 and make note charts from them.

if you chart to just any mp3, whenever any player misses a note, the audio for the WHOLE song will drop out. it'll sound like crap.

No, the author could make that single mp3 the audio for all tracks (guitar, bass, drums, bass drum, background, etc.), so when a player misses a note, they will still hear the song.

This method is the norm when modding Guitar Hero II or III, because it would really suck to have the whole song drop out. :(

I wasn't so much referring to the point about audio dropping out when you miss a note, so much as I was talking about how incredibly difficult it is to author note charts for some songs when you don't have isolated instrument tracks.

Well I was addressing dragonflyr's post, but that's very true. As a drummer, sometimes it's easy to get bass and the bass pedal mixed up and overall it's simply much more difficult to interpret the notes.

So it's extremely difficult, but possible?

Oh yeah, people do it all the time. ScoreHero.com has an intense custom song community set up, as well as FretsonFire Fan Forum for the same type of thing.

true .... but it's not "real". (kinda a hack job)

there should be an audio "penalty" when you miss a note. just leaving all the audio playing no matter what is kinda cheating, imo.

but, yes , i guess if you just wanna play along with a tune and go for a score, i see your point.
