Who is the better guitarist? Eddie Van Halen OR Buckethead?
I thought to myself, I can't decide!!
So I made this thread to see what you all think.... :)
Try out the poll above or just post your opinions on which one of these rock legends should be top dog....
Also include why you chose either guitarist....thank you....

So not a lot of Buckethead fans I see...
I understand since Eddie came first (plus songs like "Spanish Fly" are INSANE!!)....
Yet Buckethead is also proficient in playing the bass guitar > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIwi916Q588
BTW this video is little...different....

He has great left hand technique, and while there is some cool stuff going when he does play bass, I don't believe he's very proficient at making good bass lines from what I heard.

True that; Buckethead's forte is the electric guitar....
He can do some cool things on the bass.

But you have to admit he can do some cool things on the bass.
I did, read a little bit closer. ;) There is some cool stuff going on there, but it gets lost in translation in the overall piece.

You are the coolest guy on the planet for saying that
Its Eddie as a shredder but as guitarist its Buckethead because almost every solo from Eddie uses taping, Buckethead uses more styles, but I,m not saying Ed is a bad guitarist.

Eddie was the first Shredder. He wins.
Actually, Dick Dale was the first shredder.
On topic, I take a null vote. Technically, Buckethead is faster, but EVH comes up with better melodies while shredding instead of just mindless wankery. I also love EVH's tone, it's probably my favorite tone of all time. That being said I do indeed love both guitarists.

As a fan of both, I say Buckethead. He is one of the few people that I define as a melodic/emotional shredder. Just check this song out: Melodic/Emotional Shredding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8akmP6Sjv2o&fmt=18)

ok... why do people compare these two like this the obvious winner is buckethead he is a far better shredder than van halen...yes van halen was first and without him there may not be a buckethead...but the question is who is a better shredder not who was the first shredder or who influenced the most ppl or invented tapping, etc. its who is the best technically...and anyone who watches one lick of bucketheads vs van halens knows its buckethead

I have a feeling I'm going to regret this, but Eddie Van Halen is slightly, just slightly, overrated. Just because he was the "pioneer" of shred guitar, doesn't mean he is better than everybody else. Buckethead is a lot more technical and better than Van Halen. Buckethead wins.

I feel that, had he been in a band that didn't suck, he could have become a guitarist worthy of the heaps and heaps of praise that he gets. As was, the rest of the sound that is played around him for every song he played but "Eruption" really hurt my opinion of him.

Different people say different things about Herman Li. Really the only he's got for him is that he plays fast, and that's about it. He doesn't have much technique and he plays with virtually no "feeling" or "soul". My impression of Herman Li is that he just plays fast and everybody thinks he's a guitar god. Not taking anything away from him, he's got incredible skill, but he doesn't match up with many of the great guitarists of our time.

That's pretty much the way I feel, he's underrated and overrated at the same time. Some people think he's too good, but like you said a lot of people think he just plays fast. He can pick fast and his solos are pretty skillful if you ask me, but he's lacking soul and feel like you said. If you asked me who the best "shredder" overall was I would say John Petrucci, and I'm putting emphasis on the word shredder.

I play guitar and I idolize John Petrucci. But almost the same thing goes for him, he's got no soul when playing. He's like a freaking robot. He uses too much technique. The only real time he's shown some actual guitar feel is on his solo album Suspended Animation. Search Glasgow Kiss on youtube. This is John Petrucci at his best.

His earlier stuff had a lot of feel. In the video I posted he's tearing it up and he still looks like he's having a good time. At their concert this summer he looked like he had Lou Gehrigs while playing a solo in everything but his fingers and arms.
Somebody close this thread I'm sick of seeing the ignorant title. So stupid.

The poll question is who is the better shredder? Buckethead is clearly the better shredder of the two. Just because EVH was one of the originators of 'shred' guitar doesn't mean he automatically wins every poll.

Eddie was the best shredder of the 80's however I think Buckethead is better due to he has more diversity in playing the guitar, from something slow and peacefull Padmasana to something more fast and heavy like Bontus.
But everyone is wrong so far as who the best shredder is. It should be Michael Angelo Baito
Here's one of his best especially the ending
