From GAMESPOT, fresh vids and impressions of the ps2 build:

Confirm anyone's fears?

EDIT: also completely backs up Kayahx's thread.

My Opinion:

After watching the video and reading the article, I would have to say i'm not really surprised or shocked or maddened by anything there. As expected, the charts and buttons don't look as flashy as the 360 and ps3 counterparts, and obviously the background show isn't as pretty. HOWEVER, I was shocked with how smooth the characters were in the background. Seems like there was still a decent amount of detail there.

As for the article, sucks that BWT is completely different, along with the other missing features. Sorry ps2 owners, maybe its time to move next gen?

Too bad I'm boycotting Gamespot because of the Jeff Gertsmann thing :(

I wonder if the background graphics are actually a pre-rendered video and that is why a) it holds up so well with all the effects/blur and b) it would explain why custom characters are missing from the PS2 version.

That makes sense in a way, but...I don't think so. They wouldn't be able to do a lot of stuff, such as the look if you fail.

Given the graphics and features that are present, combined with the instrument portability, I don't think it looks like a bad port.

Sure, it is sad to lose the character builder and BWT, but it's hardly worth the pages of insults I read earlier today. For a 6 year old console it certainly keeps the same basic flavor of the game.

It would be crazy to expect the character builder, especially the tattoo maker. It would eat up your memory cards. I think it's worth getting a next gen console for this game. DLC and all these features, not to mention updates that could improve the game are good enough reasons to upgrade.

After seeing this video, and reading the part about same peripherals as PS3, I once again am stoked to get this on PS2. Yes, it's missing features, but it's a music game. That and it does look pretty damn good for this last-gen console. The current-gen people get their downloads, but i plan on joining that boat in a few months. My PS3 purchase will completely handle these instruments? I'm there. No wonder there's a massive shortage of PS3 copies of the special edition around here. They needed the parts for PS2.

Idiots at all the local game stores around here (lol gamestop) told me the controllers weren't compatible, which I knew was wrong, but I was still double thinking my purchase next week if they really were right, and not just blowing smoke out of their asses (as per usual).

Less than a week to go before I get to rock!

Still kinda miffed the promised "special features not on 360 or PS3" aren't there... unless those "special" features were special in a "feel-pity-for-the-guy-but-he-probably-doesn't-realize-he's-pissing-in-his-shoe" kind of way.

If you get this game for a PS2 and play it on any other system you might be more motivated to get a next gen console with BWT changes.

I'm pissed. I've been looking forward to this game forever. I have a Wii as a next gen console, but it wasn't being released for that. Luckily, I have a PS2. I've been eagerly awaiting to make my own band and just have a total blast in this. Now I expected it to be lacking to the PS3 and 360 version, but the game is pretty much just Guitar Hero 3 with drums now.
I would be fine with a extremely small character maker, choose a face and some clothes at least. I could care less about making my own tattoos/logos or whatever. But just the fact of having my own character that was unique to me matters a ton to me.
The Band World Tour was probably what I was most looking forward to. I was waiting to make my own character and then go city to city, getting better and watching as my player played and progressed. But now they've turned it into a four player Guitar Hero.
I'm now considering just getting Guitar Hero Three for the wii instead. I was really looking forward to this game and now it's completely ruined and probably not worth the $160. A big middle finger to Rock Band for the PS2.
And I'm not gonna buy an X-box 360 and especially not a PS3 just to play this game. If Madden 08 can have a Custom Team Maker for the PS2, Rock Band can have a character creator. If Madden 08 can have a custom Franchise on the PS2, Rock Band can have BWT. If it had the two modes, I would be willing to delete every thing on my memory card to play that game.
Oh and I could care less about graphics. The characters could be polygons for all I care. That's why I didn't get the PS3, waste of money for better graphics.
Rock Band 2 better be for the wii, and if it's for the PS2 they better not turn it into a complete piece of trash like they did here.
Rock Band was pretty much the only thing I wanted for Christmas. So pretty much my Christmas is ruined. Thanks a lot.

So it's Harmonix's fault that you can't afford a Xbox360 or PS3?
Just upgrade your console man. It's not that much money.

So I take it that unique polygons is what you really wanted in RB on PS2? I kid...I kid...:D

Seriously though, it does suck that BWT isn't on the PS2 version but the game will still be fun as hell to play and rock out with.

Alright, I was posting some thoughts over in Kyhax's thread yesterday afternoon...

I ended up getting the game only yesterday. I played until around 11pm. I have 2 GH guitars and a KR mic. The only thing missing... drums. (I'll wait til I get my PS3 version at x-mas)

It is a freaking blast on PS2. It had exactly what I wanted: gameplay.

I don't care about making a character, or band, or slave away at playing In Bloom for the eleventyith time... I wanted to play songs. And now I had almost 60 more. Plus, after a few drinks, the wife convinces me to belt out Black Hole Sun while she plays the guitar. Perfect.

Sure, the graphics aren't as good as the 360 demo I played. I was still pretty impressed with some of the subtleties.

I'll get my PS3 and RB (again) after x-mas money rolls in, but I have something fun to play until then.

Why not? It could just jump to a video of you failing when you fail lol

This is actually what I thought would happen: as long as the gameplay was upheld (even though not as shiny) it will still be a successful port. I'm hoping to see my friend's ps2 version in a week or so...

They'd need ALOT of videos. It would be almost as bad as the ammount of costumes they need for the other way.

After hearing that no one really knows when the PS2 RB bundle is coming out and how many will be available, I thought Christmas was ruined for my 10 year old. But after reading these threads Christmas may be saved. Can someone please confirm if the following is possible: I can buy the PS3 bundle and the PS2 stand-alone game and be able to play all instruments/vocals on the PS2. This is all assuming that the PS2 bundle doesn't arrive on the popular release date of 12/18. Somebody please help and let me know. If i'm an idiot for thinking this please let me know also. I just need to know.

I don't understand completely.
Are you saying Harmonix is doing this to the PS2 so everyone needs to buy the PS3 version for the bundle?

I can not see them doing that. Look how fast the others were sold out. We were already warned about shortages for the PS3 and XBox versions. No surprise that PS2 will be the same.

And "Welcome to the community!"

idk why anyone would bother getting this on ps2. no dlc? no thank you

you're missing out on well over half the game just in music.

and why are people focusing on anything more than the music? so what theres no character creater?? isn't the music and playing what this game is really all about?

I BOUGHT the PS3 bundle and the PS2 version this morning on my way to work.

My Plan is to use the PS3 instruments on the PS2 until sometime next year when the wife OKs the next gen console. We already have 3 PS2 Guitars.

If this doesn't work, then I will return the slightly used PS3 version WHEN and IF the PS2 bundle comes out, and then give away or sell the standalone PS2 I got today.

The number one reason I did this was so that Rock band will be under the tree on Dec 25th.

I too have little boys who want to beat the drums on Christmas morning.

I will be testing this out tonight (very quietly) to make sure my scheme works.

I will post my findings.

I'm anxious as hell too, considering I just did the same thing. Just bought the PS3 bundle, PS2 disc, and USB hub. $260 after taxes. $100 more than the PS2 bundle should be (I'm probably stupid and impulsive). But I'm sick of dealing with the lack of info on the PS2 bundle, and I wanted to make sure I had it for Christmas.

I'll just try to return the PS3 disc somewhere, or sell it on eBay.

Gametrailers has 5-6 new PS2 RB vids up. here's one.

looks like they vidcapped the X360/PS3 version and then just play that video in the background.

seriously, why do they even make games for the PS2 anymore? What happened to the regular xbox?

All PS3 instruments work on PS2.

Unfortunately, "Wanted Dead or Alive" is unplayable on drums because it freezes the game.

Hey even games like Tony Hawk 3 for N64 had customizable character options. That's why I find it's absolutely ridiculous that a game system like N64 can handle character creation, but apparently PS2 can't.

And as I said before, I'm not buying a new console when the only game I want is Rock Band and I have a wii.

It's not that the PS2 can't handle customizable characters, its the fact that Rock Band requires a lot of processor power just to keep 4 player working 100%. The background is pre-rendered video to help free up the processor, so that is why there is no customizable characters.

All this whining proves is that no matter what anyone tries to do, you can't please everybody. Guess HMX shouldn't even bother with RB2 on PS2. Maybe by then you'll have saved up enough money for a 360 or PS3
