This thread has drifted off into vague console bashing and a mutated version of "which system should I buy?" and I think we're kind of off topic here.
Unfortunately The Beatles: Rock Band will not be coming out on the PS2. I'm not sure why some news sources are reporting that TB:RB will be coming out on the PS2, but all of the official news from our end has only listed information for the Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii. Please consult the Announcements forums and News tabs for the official press releases.
Also, if anyone comes across any articles listing that TB:RB will be available on the PS2 please pass them along to me and we'll make sure things get sorted out.
We decided to focus on the next gen consoles for TB:RB for a variety of reasons. DLC plays a large roll in this, and due to the PS2's limited online functionality and lack of storage space this isn't something we'd be able to accommodate. Vocal harmonies also require a tremendous amount of processing power and 3 mic support, which is also more geared towards the next gen platforms.
There were several other issues at play, but those are the two big reasons why you won't see TB:RB on the PS2.
As someone who already developed for the Playstation 2 platform, I would like to rebute some points.
Both the limited online functionality and lack of storage can be addressed the same way: make the user download from a PC into a USB mass device.
The musics can have and ID that can be verified to avoid piracy.
You can strip things as the new vocal system, and still sell it a lot for happy PS2 users, as you did in the past, using videos intead of 3D in the background.
You could simply port the musics to the old Rock Band 2 engine.
That said, lack of will should not be masked as technical dificulties please. If you do not want to release, ok, people will find a way to hack the good and old Rock Band engine to inser Beatles music there, or keep buying Guitar Hero that sill supports PS2 very well.
Thanks, you can now lock this if you want (but I wish it was not locked).
