Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis plans to live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine.
Variety reports that the Beowulf and A Christmas Carol director has joined with Disney to remake the trippy 1968 movie based on the music of The Beatles. According to the trade paper, Disney "has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture 3-D digital production format he employed for A Christmas Carol."
The new Yellow Submarine will reportedly sail on to the sun, till it finds the sea green, in summer 2012.
Variety adds that the deal "has been months in the making with armies of lawyers, and sources said that rights will encompass the future prospects of a Broadway stage musical like Disney accomplished with The Lion King, a Cirque du Soleil stage production ("Love," a production based on Beatles tunes, has been running for two years at The Mirage) and merchandise."
*******************
So how do you feel about this?
I think Beatles publicity is a-okay, but I'd rather see a digital remastering and re-release of the original Yellow Submarine than a remake. But then again, I can understand how the original isn't exactly appealing to kids these days.
Despite such a movie's dubious lack of necessity, I think that - for all intents and purposes - Zemeckis is the best choice. Pixar - easily the best in the western animation biz - tends to avoid remakes, so they're out of the picture. The human-based story and character models - a staple of Zemeckis' animated movies (Beowulf, Polar Express) - would probably be better off without a Pixar treatment, as well.
When this goes through, do you think Zemeckis will take some inspiration from TBRB's "Yellow Submarine" sequence? I hope so; I'm more of a fan of the surreal, almost-cartoony look of RB than the hyper-realism of Zemeckis' animated efforts.
Also, in further defense of Zemeckis: This guy directed Forrest Gump. That's some serious business.

For which movie did he win the oscar?
But I think an animated yellow submarine movie would be a great idea, as long as they make some huge adjustments.

He won Oscars for Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump. However, Back to the Future is more ballin'.
I'm alright with this. I can trust a Yellow Submarine remake in his hands. And it does say "remake", not "re-imagining", meaning we'll likely get the same story and shots. I wouldn't worry about any of the famous movie scenes being lost. I'm interested in seeing the Nowhere Man. Wonder who they'll cast and if they'll lip-sync the songs...

If Disney is on board with Zemeckis, then I'm picturing the inevitable YELLOW SUBMARINE: THE RIDE, which actually sounds cooler than remaking the movie itself.

Both. It's motion captured by actors for the basis of CGI.

Presumably a CGI movie that features extensive use of motion-capture. Add in a tremendous amount of detail and you have a little bit of both. See: the upcoming Christmas Carol (http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3817996825/) movie.

What would be really great is if he could gain the rights to the "live" Beatles from the original and add them to the end, but as cel animated.

Futurama ride at Universal.
That isn't going to happen. Not for a long time, seeing as how a Simpsons ride opened early last year over at Universal. Plus with a new roller coaster opening this year and an entire Harry Potter ISLAND over at Islands of Adventure opening next year, I wouldn't hold my breath.
There was a Yellow Submarine Ride.

I will not watch this for two reasons.
If Disney is involved, that definitely impacts the content of the movie.
I also never cared about The Beatles cartoon or the original Yellow Submarine for the same reason that I don't care about this: they do not star the band. I really only care about the music.

The cartoons did not feature the actual band members, obviously, but at least they were based on events that actually happened to the band. Like the time they went to the "inner world" after falling into a well:

1. Paul and Ringo do voices
2. Real Beatles Music, no covers
3. ideas from the original film
4. cool story
5. looks trippy
6. Beatles story

If Paul and Ringo did anything, it would probably be more in the realm of a cameo. I don't know if it would be a good choice to have their older selves play their younger selves.
Did anyone play the video game version of From Russia With Love back in 2004? Sean Connery reprised his James Bond role after 30 years and it wasn't exactly a pretty result.

I was thinking about how to remake the Yellow Submarine movie after seeing the 1968 original. Some may say it's blasphemy, but the original movie is kind of terrible.
If they were to redo it, it would have to be completely rewritten, it would have to be weirder, and it'd have to be aimed at an older audience. Considering who is involved with this project right now (Disney, Zemeckis) it probably won't be worth seeing. Disney hasn't put out a good, non-Pixar animated movie in about seven years and nothing in Zemeckis' resume suggests he's capable of making a bizarre, unique movie (his directorial filmography includes the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump).
Not unlike Across the Universe, this will probably just be another bland "re-imagining" of the band's music.
I'll pass.

If Disney had enough prudence to seal Zemeckis as the director, I would hope they'd have enough prudence to keep their ****ty teen acts far away from it.
The Jonas Brothers did do that cover of "Hello Goodbye" which was in simple terms a crime against humanity. Presumably, though, they'd be using the original tracks in this movie. Presumably.
I mean, the article makes it out like these negotiations have been happening for a long, long time. I mean, Across the Universe used covers and I don't recall reports of many legal hurdles. Here's hoping that the "armies of lawyers" means access to the original songs.

The ride seems interesting and cool, but man, its crazy to imagine how Mindblowing, Creative and trippy it could be if the Wizards at Walt Disney Imagineering could get a crack at it. I admit I thought of the same motion stimulator for this ride to work, but Disney could totally create an actual ride having you actually board a yellow submarine and travel through Pepperland and seeing the Beatles as living breathing Audio-Anamatronics. They unveiled a new Obama AA for the Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom, and he looks as fluid and realistic and ever.
And of course, Apple being the business they are, could have an amazing gift shop chock full of Beatles Merchandise that they can sell Tourists at overpriced prices who will eat it up of course. I mean the Beatles have that universal appeal with their music so everyone will be familiar with it. Hell, I can even imagine this Permanent nicely set up Beatles: Rock Band demo station too.
Again this is me just picturing it if it came true. It would be a great joy to see The Beatles and Disney partner up, cause Disney usually does go all out in their rides and think about how surreal it would be to hear "All You Need Is Love" at a Disney Park outside the ride.

I guess I just wanted to point out that Roger Rabbit is, in fact, a bizarre and unique movie.
But if you thought the original movie was terrible, then I really find no contradiction in your stance. I would argue that Zemeckis has a penchant for adapting "classic" stories, though, at least for entertainment's purposes if nothing else.

I asked myself this question as well
It depends on how Disney themes it.
It could fit in Fantasyland (Magic Kingdom is currently going to go through with this Overhaul to add more rides and space and re-themeing) so it would fit more snuggly there.
It could also fit in Disney MGM/Hollywood Studios as a Movie Ride in the same Vain as Star Tours, Indiana Jones and Toy Story Mania. Now that I think about it, I think the Yellow Submarine ride would best fit here.
It could fit also in EPCOT! Imagine walking through the countries in World Showcase, and stopping in the UK part and hearing the bleak Eleanor Rigby and coming in closer to see the Ride sign and colorful building
Could be epic either way!:D

Roger Rabbit is actually a great film. Probably my favorite out of everything Zemeckis has done. It had a lot going for it, though -- the notion of seeing so many different classic licensed cartoon characters in one film is something that might not ever be replicated again.
I'm just not sure having Zemeckis direct a Beatles property is enough for me to anticipate a good movie.
As far as the original goes, it wasn't offensively bad or anything. It was charming in its own way and some of the musical sequences are really cool. The really specific art style was also a nice touch. But the narrative elements are plagued with problems... a lot of it comes off as trite and uninspired.
Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if it was even more abstract. Less dialogue, less narrative, more music.

Seems like a waste to do a remake when you could make a new story with a different set of songs. The original film is just as trippy now as it was then... But I rarely see the point in remakes

I've thought for many yearw that they should do a sequel to Yellow Submarine.
I love the original movie though, and I really don't want to see a remake of the same story, I think it stands as it is as a period piece.
I would like it though if they took The Beatles, Pepperland and the characters from the movie and gave them another adventure. I think that could be great if well done.

I would assume so. The Beatles are from England and most of the rides in epcot are simulators. So it would probably be in epcot.
If they did have a gift shot, they should sell little plush toys of all the characters. All of the little kids that are too young to understand the power of the beatles would love them.

all you people dont have to worry about the movie having beatles music it will have beatles music not other people doing covers.robert zemeckis is a huge beatles fan and he wouldnt do that i know for a fact he will be using beatles music.yellow submarine could use a new facelift the graphics are outdated and some new technology would make it look great i mean look how great beuwulf looked and polar express.even if they werent that good they still looked great.i just hope this movie isnt to much like other disney movies.the beatles told the original yellow submarine director they wanted this movie to be the opposite of disney they wanted the anti disney movie and i think thats what made yellow submarine so great.it wasnt a typical disney movie.

In my mind it could be awesome if they followed the artistic direction taken on the Intro/Outro done for the game by Passion Pictures. The mixture of 2D/3D was brilliant and would have the same wonderful surreal qualities the original did. The music should be the Beatles. And get some good voice impersonators in... just like they did with the original. I'd love it if they kept in the now 'archive' footage at the end...

Ummmm.... do not want. Look, Disney, I understand that you've made an empire based on taking previous content, re-doing it, and then copyrighting the hell out of it so no one can re-do YOUR content, but there is absolutely no reason at all whatsoever for a new Yellow Submarine movie. No. Leave it alone. No.

The original movie has been a treasure in my heart since I saw it in the theater as as young boy. With technology today, the mind is limitless on our imagination can do with this new movie, as well as a theme ride! I myself am looking forward to it! It is ironic though, that The Beatles really did not like the idea of doing another cartoon because they didn't want it to look too "Disney". Once they saw some of the original art, they finally gave their blessing. It's just kinda ironic that Disney is doing it now! Also, for all of you who think the world will end in December 2012, you'll get to see the movie as it's scheduled for Summer 2012! :)

This is going to be a great big load of nostalgia-euthanasia. :(
There's already going to be fifty other computer-animated films coming out around this time, seems the least they could do is get a director who doesn't suck at them, or have it uniquely hand-drawn to give it a few steps away from the rest.
I'd vote John Lassiter to direct. Which is the better film, Toy Story or Beowulf? -_-
