View Full Version : The Revised White Album

It's fairly widely known that George Martin wanted - and pushed for - a single album in the place of the sprawling 2-disc album we today know as The White Album, as he felt that several of the tracks weren't particularly good. I have never actually heard which tracks he felt this way about (although I in some cases imagine... Revolution 9, cough cough) but I think it's an interesting game to try and re-imagine the White Album as a single album... I find it rather difficult, in fact, to manage.

(Note: This is mostly - with some revisions - from a thread I did in another forum a long time ago)

The rules I used were:

1. Keep the (original) basic order of the tracks intact as much as possible.
2. Keep the revised album as close to 15 tracks as can be managed (I ended up with 16).
3. George still gets 4 songs.
4. It's permissible to use alternate takes or songs that were rejected from the final line-up (I did).
5. Keep a proper balance between the composers. At no point in my revised album does any composer get more than 2 tracks in a row.

For mine, I started by eliminating 8 tracks - two from each side. These were Glass Onion/Wild Honey Pie (Side 1), Don't Pass Me By (sorry Ringo)/I Will (Side 2), Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for me and My Monkey/Long Long Long (Side 3), Revolution 1/Revolution 9 (Side 4, I will explain in a minute)

Then (and this was more painful) I took out: Ob-la-di Ob-la-da, The Continuing Story of Bunglow Bill, Martha My Dear, Why Don't We do it in the Road, Birthday, Mother Nature's Son, Honey Pie, Cry Baby Cry and Good Night.

Then I did substitutions: I replaced the final cut of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with the acoustic version, replaced "Mother Nature's Son" with "Junk" (if they had ever recorded a proper version anyway) "Birthday" with "Not Guilty" and Revolution 1 and 9 with the 10 minute long 20th take of Revolution, which IMO combines the best of both tracks into a more palatable and tidy package.

I ended up with:

Side One

1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic version)
4. Happiness is a Warm Gun
5. I'm So Tired
6. Blackbird
7. Piggies
8. Rocky Raccoon
9. Julia

Side 2

10. Not Guilty
11. Yer Blues
12. Junk
13. Sexy Sadie
14. Helter Skelter
15. Savoy Truffle
16. Revolution (Take 20)

Ultimately, I think this shows its pretty hard to do. I would much rather have the original album than my revision, although I do strongly wish "Not Guilty" and the alternate take of "Revolution" had been used.

I don't quite understand this... just a little game I guess... If HMX came out with this version of the White Album for DLC I would be super dissappointed

Something had to go to get it down to 15 (16) tracks. Also, I strongly suspect George Martin would have suggested both of those tracks be jettisoned if his idea for a single album had been used.

Yep, just a game - like I said, we did this on another forum. Came up with alternate titles for the revised album too.

I wouldn't mind a revised White Album release for The Beatles: Rock Band, although it would look nothing like the one you came up with. It would exclude the tracks that would lack the "band." I'll come up with one after listening to the original album again.

Oh sure, for the game it would be somewhat different - no Paul solo acoustic stuff, or "Julia" for that matter.

My revised white album:

"Back in the U.S.S.R."
"Dear Prudence"
"Glass Onion"
"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
"The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill" (with guitar intro)
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
"Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
"I'm So Tired"
"Rocky Raccoon"
"Don't Pass Me By" (violin charted to guitar)
"Why Don't We Do It in the Road?"
"I Will" (vocal bass charted to bass)
"Birthday"
"Yer Blues"
"Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"
"Sexy Sadie"
"Helter Skelter"
"Long, Long, Long"
"Revolution 1" (single version on-disc, although the album version could still be made DLC I suppose, for those of you who prefer that version)
"Savoy Truffle"
"Cry Baby Cry"

Red denotes songs on-disc

You know who could easily sort this out, right? Music legend Ric Ocasek. He'd just wave that magical ring of his (that he usually reserves for wooing gorgeous women) at it and *poof* White Album gets sorted!

Wait, if George Martin pushed for something why didn't he get it? He's a bloody knight, does that mean someone bested him in combat? Outrageous!

9. I Will

5. Keep a proper balance between the composers. At no point in my revised album does any composer get more than 2 tracks in a row.1. I just could not do that.
2. Same here.
3. I as much as I think he is my favorite, I could not do that.
4. Didn't feel like going into that.
5. I think Lennon has one more song than McCartney, Harrison has two and Ringo has one track.

This is what I came up with...

Side A

"Back in the U.S.S.R."
"Dear Prudence"
"Glass Onion"
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
"Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
"Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"
"Martha My Dear"
"Don't Pass Me By"

Side B

"Birthday"
"Savoy Truffle"
"I'm So Tired"
"Rocky Raccoon"
"Blackbird"
"Cry Baby Cry"
"Sexy Sadie"
"Helter Skelter"

It was hard, but here it is:

Side One

01- Back in The USSR
02- Dear Prudence
03- While My Guitar Gently Weeps
04- Happines is a Warm Gun
05- Martha My Dear
06- Blackbird
07- Circles(A song George wrote for the album but didn't make the cut)
08- Don’t Pass Me By

Side Two

09- Yer Blues
10- Not Guilty(Same as Circles)
11- I Will
12- Julia
13- Long, Long, Long
14- Helter Skelter
15- Cry Baby Cry

I Know I Will and Julia come before Yer Blues(there on side one on the real album) but I cheated a bit because the two are not really great openers. The coda from Cry Baby Cry made me end the album with it.

I had the same feeling but decided to include the full take of Can You Take Me Back as it stands pretty well on its own at about 2 minutes long.

Why yes, the noble Sir Paul bested him.

I excluded songs because of instrumentation.

For example, Blackbird did not make my list because it has only guitar and vocals. That's two people at the most playing. Same thing goes for Julia.

Piggies was not included because it lacks drums and only has tambourine for percussion.

Not a bad idea. I really like this song too. But the only slot it would fit in on my album is in place of "Rocky Raccoon" - and then my wife would kill me. So no go on that.:p

Ok here's my shot. And I don't follow along with the Harrison rule on this one, because I think most of them on this album are his worst songs. I left out songs that would suck on RB due to lack of instruments. Hence Blackbird's exclusion.

1.Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence.
3. Glass Onion
7. WMGGW
8. Happiness is a Warm Gun
9. Birthday
10. Mother Nature's Son
11. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except me and my Monkey
12. Helter Skelter
13. Sexy Sadie
14. Helter Skelter.
15. Revolution

If i had a 16, it'd probably be Why dont we Do it in the Road. I don't know why, i just love that song

If I had to rework the White Album, I'd split the White Album and some of its era singles, b-sides, and outtakes into two albums: A Doll's House, which would include the harder songs; and The Beatles, which would include the acoustic and lighter songs.

A Doll's House
Side A
Birthday
Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness is a Warm Gun
It's All Too Much

Side B
Hey Bulldog
Don't Pass Me By
Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
Helter Skelter
Savoy Truffle
Revolution
Good Night

The Beatles
Side A
Revolution 1
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
Blackbird
Rocky Raccoon
Julia

Side B
Lady Madonna
The Long and Winding Road (naked version)
Mother Nature's Son
Jealous Guy
Cry Baby Cry
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic)

Okay, on Jealous Guy, I know that the lyrics for this version of the song didn't exist in '68, but this second album could've been pushed back a year to '69 at a time where these lyrics could've existed. Plus, we really don't know when he wrote these new lyrics.

Good idea on the titles - my original idea was sort of like yours, but I suggested calling the "harder" album "A Doll's House" and the more acoustic album "India".

Smoot, I made a minor edit to the album, changing Long, Long, Long to Jealous Guy. Gave my explanation above for the temporal anomaly. And "India" is a much better name for it, I just gave it "The Beatles" because I couldn't think of a title.

Interesting idea, I'll try my hand at it later (and I'm ignoring the "George needs 4 songs" rule, as someone else said, not his best work on that LP).

@Others: Why would you put Revolution 1 on it? Revolution had already been released as a single. I can't imagine the band agreeing on what's essentially a duplicate taking up the space.

And while I'd love to have Revolution take 20, it'd be too long for a single disc.

I disagree, Me and My Monkey is a great song in every way.... I can not wait till we get a hold of it on Rock Band.

Here is how my single disc White Album would go.

Side 1

1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Obla Di Ob LA Da
5. Why Dont We Do It In The Road
6. Birthday
7. Blackbird
8. Revolution 1

1. Helter Skelter
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Happiness is A Warm Gun
4. Everybody Has Something To Hide But Me and My Monkey
5. Mother Nature's Son
6. Piggies
7. Savoy Tuffle
8. Yer Blues

Sorry, I know you wanted all four Harrison songs but I can not stand Long, Long, Long..... too many other great ones.

For those who don't like Long, Long, Long, you could put It's All Too Much on there instead. There are a lot of songs recorded before/during the White Album sessions that didn't appear on the album/waited for a later album.

And I love Glass Onion, Why Don't We Do It On the Road, and Yer Blues, but these would be better suited as B-sides.

Oh I like "Monkey" just fine, it just doesn't seem like Martin's thing, at least that is my guess, and its hard for me to think of any other Lennon song on the album I would rather remove. Maybe "Glass Onion". I don't like Long Long Long much either, Harrison had a boatload of other songs in his closet that would have been much better in its place. It wasn't a hard and fast rule, just there to keep things balanced and reasonably fair to George.

It's important to be clear whether you're proposing a revision of the white album in general, or for play on Rock Band. I've seen defense on this board for some of my least favorite tracks, so I suppose we should all be glad it came out as it did; big, messy and weird.

As for Rock Band...

1. Back in the USSR*
2. Dear Prudence*
3. Glass Onion
4. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps*
6. Happiness is a Warm Gun
7. I'm So Tired
8. Rocky Raccoon
9. Don't Pass Me By
10. I Will
11. Birthday*
12. Yer Blues
13. Everybody's Got Something to Hide...
14. Sexy Sadie
15. Helter Skelter*
16. Savoy Truffle
17. Cry Baby Cry

There is a web site that has something like this, discussing what went on, and has a poll to let people decide what would be on a single LP White Album. Tough to choose, but off the top of my head...

1 - Back In the USSR
2 - Dear Prudence
3 - Glass Onion
4 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5 - Happiness Is A Warm Gun
6 - Martha My Dear
7 - Bungalow Bill

1 - Birthday
2 - I'm So Tired
3 - Piggies
4 - Everybody's Got Something To Hide
5 - Helter Skelter
6 - Savoy Truffle
7 - Cry Baby Cry

So I thinking about how on this album there's tracks that I like in Mono and ones that I like Stereo so I decided to make a tracklist of which I prefer and actually ended up with 8 in mono and 8 in stereo. I put them in order with side 1 being mono and side 2 being stereo and got this.

Oh yeah I edited Dear Prudence and Back in the U.S.S.R. so they don't play into each other.

I find it funny that i came across this topic, because iv been playing my White Album non stop during college work on my record player

(I thank my parents for buying it, leaving it in the attic for 30+ years, me coming across a rather odd looking crate and then listening to my first vynl record ><)

anyway..my White Album would consist of:

1. Back in the U.S.S.R
2. Dear Prudence
3. While my Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Martha My Dear
5. Black Bird
6. Piggies
7. Rocky Raccoon
8. Birthday
9. ..Me and My Monkey
10. Helter Skelter
11. Revolution I
12. Savoy Truffle
13. (added as a special last song) Good Night [what i mean by this, is it would be not listed on the album, if you keep listening to the album, itll play after a pause you know what i mean?]

cool topic, i like viewing others opinions of songs, White album is awsomnee :)

I could never do this, because the white album has so many great songs on it. Also, the songs that don't make sense are great fillers. If I had to removw everything it would be wild honey pie.
