I was curious if it crossed anyones mind using some rap songs on rockband...and i dont really consider beastie boys the solution. they have plenty of rap artists using rock instrumentals (i.e. the shop boys whole cd "Rock Star Mentality") has all rock instrumentals and is rock inspired with rap lyrics. i think you would be surprised if you released a set list on live how many people would purchase them

I remember back in the day when LL Cool J did "Mama Said Knock You Out" on the MTV VMA's with a live band. For its time, it was a killer performance. There are some solid tracks out there. I think the biggest problem is not having enough guitar/bass lines in most tracks. You can find some solid tracks though, especially from The Roots!

There are a great number of live performances from hip hop artists that would work well. Perhaps from an awards show or from a concert...

The Judegment Night Sound Track has got to be one of the BEST Rock/Rap collaborations ever put together. In some spots it sounds a bit rushed, but it still has the best of both worlds.

On topic, sounds cool. Some rap albums/artists do have a more rock sound with rap lyrics. If it sounds good and has instrument parts for guitar, drums, bass, and vocals I don't see why not. There are also some remix versions of songs that have rock bands playing with the rappers singing. Like Rammstein playing Hi My Name Is, with Eminem singing, that would be funny. Or the Linkin Park/Jay-Z album.
Don't be so condesending on new ideas, some people would love these types of songs as dlc

I could see a FEW working out. Off the top of my head...
Shamrocks n' Shenaningans by House of Pain
All About the Benjamins (Rock Version, obviously) by Puff Daddy and the Fam.
or, All About The Pentiums by Weird Al
most anything by Limp Bizkit
Rock Superstar by Cypress Hill
I'm sure there's other Rap n' Roll that could work...

Hey, I just cringe at the thought that rap might come up in a mystery setlist.
As DLC, whatever blows your skirt up, but not at the expense of true Rock and Roll.
The time it takes to do DLC on rap is time away from doing real rock and roll, which is what this game was designed to be all about.
These are my concerns.

They aren't going to add anything to any setlist. Everything new will be brought in as DLC. Don't like it don't buy it, but don't bash those that do like it.

So far, I have been "ALL IN" for whatever downloadable content comes along.
I dont know the new bands, or artists all that well, dont really matter, but to buy something blindly assuming it is rock and roll and getting rap would be bad, as it WILL come up in your mystery setlists.
Now if they called it a "Rap Pack" that would be ok, just dont want any surprises.

Hip hop drumming is very difficult performed live. Many hip hop drums have 16th note kicks, nearly impossible to play on a kit, not to mention the finicky RB kick pedal.
It would be awesome, though...I'm down for some J Dilla or Madlib!

Serious questions, no trolling.
Wouldn't a guitar line have to be created for most rap songs?, because I hear very few of them with guitar. (I know you can probably name a dozen, but I'm referring to the vast majority of rap) The songs I've heard with guitar have been looped samples. Doesn't sound very challenging or fun to me.
The drums are programmed (studio versions, and again I'm talking the vast majority of rap) and are usually just loops with an occasional fill and a breakdown. (usually, just halftime of the rest of the song) Aside from a funky beat, and let's face it, a lot of them are very similar, it would be boring for most drummers.
Bass lines could be cool, but again, loops-repeated.
Vocals are really the only real challenge and fun aspect of why you'd want rap in this game, IMO.
You might not like what I've brought up here, but they are issues that would have to be resolved if you hope to sell this as DLC with a broad appeal. (looking to sell as many dl's as possible, to recoup the programming time, and song liscense, oh and profit!)

I am not much of a rap fan. Kind of was when it first hit the music scene but really hate the new stuff. Run DMC, Public Enemy, Sir Mix-A-Lot, LL Cool J, Fresh Prince, etc. (I would say NWA, EasyE, 2 Live Crew, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, but I don't know if any of their songs are clean enough) might have some good songs that might work.
I am pretty much open to anything. Heck, Rock Band has already introduced me to songs and bands that I never thought I would have liked or never heard of.

I am very happy to see others intrested in rap as well. I listen to a lot of different music. But I am mostly a rap guy as thats all I heard growing up. But I have grown attached to rock, and thats with the help of those hybrid bands that add a rap twist. Rage Against the Machine most recently appealed to me, and I have always been a Linkin Park fan. Since I can't sing worth a damn, the only song my friends let me play on mic is Faith No More, lol. I have always been a bit of a closet Green Day and Metallica fan though, among other bands that had a couple songs I heard here and there that caught my attention.
I read the concerns some of you had about having any kind of rap in RB, and you made some good points. But there are hundreds of hybrid rock/rap songs out there. I'm sure these guys will can choose a handful of songs that would be fun for all instruments to play. ;)

Listen Let's face it, MOST rap songs would be B-O-R-I-N-G to play on either instrument. But there could be a handful of worthy songs to choose from. Nobody's asking HMX to change the game into RAP HERO or anything (at least I don't think they are) but they might could... maybe... if possible... see their way clear to bring in a coulple of DLC packs for fans of that genre (Rap, not Rap n Roll)
I personally don't care for anything beyond 1990 in the rap genre but if I have any hopes of getting my wish for some true R&B/jazz/Funk of any sort, I gotta hope they throw the fans of this style of music a bone too.
The problem is that even in many of the crossover songs or remixes the artist has either sampled or had a band play an existing song whilst they talk, err "rap" over music that would be more fun to play in it's original, or at worse, covered version. I think even the people that are clamoring for rap will find that once they played those repetitive or very simple parts on their respective instruments, they will grow tired of them real quick-like.... just my $.02

The problem with this is that it's very repetitive. Just listen to the beat, it loops over and over rendering this song to provide little challenge to all but the vocalist.
Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see more song variety in Rock Band, genre-wise.

NO NO NO! Let's Go is a terrible choice. That beat is the opener to a Black Sabbath / Ozzy Ozborn song and it's THE MOST BASIC PART OF THE SONG. Why would HMX choose that over the original music which would be much, much more challenging? I suppose they could for the sake of the lyrical part, but how much would be left after filtering the endless, and pointless swearing?

People that don't want the songs quit your b*tching. Seriously DLC is your choice its not forced upon you. God forbid they release A SONG or a track pack that your not going to want to download. Obviously there are ALOT of people that would like this and anyone saying all rap songs wouldn't be fun on certain instruments is just plain ignorant. There are hundreds of songs that would work out well on ALL instruments and people have already suggested a bunch of them.
It's simple don't like it don't download it. And anyone who blindly downloads tracks without listening to them first is stupid. Hit up CDNOW.com and do a search for songs before you download them they have 30 seconds samples for every song that Rock Band has released so far.

There are plenty of rap songs that could be featured in DLC for Rock Band, that have all four musical parts.
