Would Activision, or anyone else, block a patch which allowed old PS2 guitars to work on the PS3 using a PS2->USB converter?

If not, could HMX consider a patch to make this work?

I'll be stoked with that. I already have a PS2 -> USB coverter lying around gather dust.

If they could do it. I'd be pleased. I never had a problem with the PS2 Gh guitars.

Atleast it'd be a good fix until a quality strat is made.

I gotta send my strat back the slo way .... no credir/debet card. And I'm deathly afraid of getting a shoddy strat as a replacement.

Seems very unlikely, mostly because there aren't any official PS2 to USB adapters, there's just third party adapters which don't even do a very good job of emulating the guitars.

But also, those things all existed before the game came out. If they were going to support those guitars, they'd already have the code in there.

I'd be more happy if they did this rather then making the Les Paul work. I have 2 ps2 guitars just laying around taking up space that i'd like to use.

Can anyone from HMX comment on this please?

We really appreciate the work you put in to making the GH3 guitar compatible, thanks loads, shame that Activision are meanies.
PS2 guitar compatibility would be a very good alternative, if it's possible?

Cheers

I'd be pretty happy with this aswell, have a couple of old PS2 guitars lying around. And dare I say, they don't make em how they used to!

the ps2 guitars lack dpads(and guide buttons, well some of the adpaters have guide buttons but still) which are nessary to play the game fully. SO unless there was a brand new adapter made with a d-pad on it or something youd be screwed.

? do we need to use a D-Pad on the guitar?
I thought the menus were navigable using the strum bar and green/red?

By 'guide button' do you mean the Playstation logo button? As it will be a completely wired connection to USB there shouldn't be a need as long as the software looks for it.

Apparently GH1 works fine on the PS3 using old PS2 GH1/2 guitars and a USB adapter. I can't confirm as the UK 60gb PS3 won't play GH1 due to its dodgy PS2 emulation, but I read this on the GH forum.

Even if hammerons/pulloffs didn't work I'd put up with it to be able to have a bassist!

My prediction is that if this legal nonsense between Harmonix and Activision isn't worked out soon, we'll see a hardware adapter on the market. It could work with all the various permutations of guitars and software: GH1/2 guitars to GH3; GHx to Rockband; Rockband to GHx.

Why not? It's fairly trivial to design this kind of hardware. All you do is hook up a USB analyzer to the various guitars in turn, and just look at the packets each one sends when you press a button. Then, you just have a simple microcontroller translate between the source and the target.

This kind of hardware could easily be turned out in a month or so by one of the Taiwanese semiconductor fabs.

Activision and Harmonix may be able to legally block each other from doing whatever, but I don't think anyone can stop a third party from making an adapter (assuming they don't actually use the names of the games and violate trademarks or anything like that). And, there's certainly no one with the legal authority to stop you from plugging whatever the hell you want into your console.

Damn! I'd make one myself if I had any motivation.... oh, and a USB analyzer. They're kind of expensive for an individual to own.

Software analyzers are available for free or cheap depending on the route you want to take. There are a number of us interested in working on such a project but don't have the time or motivation but might be able too if we worked together.
