So I happen to work as a web dev for a advertising company which happens to make print media. (This includes vinyl... obviously). Anyway today I brought in my stratocaster and some ideas, and this is what I came home with:

I did it for a Rock Band party this weekend, and because I thought it would be cool. It wasn't as hard as I thought, and I am pretty happy w/ how it turned out, what do you guys think?

Dude, it would majorly SUCK B*LLS if your guitar turned to crap and you had to get it replaced. Merry Friggin Christmas, eh? Sorry, really hope that doesn't happen.

Hey, I just found 11 cents on the floor because of the second photo, sweet! I can put that towards my new guitar if this one breaks - cause it would be a shame to have to return it now.

Groovy stuff. I'd love to have unrestricted acess to a vinyl machine :D

I might have chose a colour other than black, or perhaps put a white boarder on it, just so the design would stand out against the black body as well as it does the white strike plate. But awesome stuff.

AWESOME!!
where did you get the guitar template??... I could design some myself but I'm too lazy to measure my guitar's dimensions.... one last thing, do you happen to know how much a vinyl print like that costs? thanks in advance

The black is actually pretty opaque, the body of the guitar is very glossy, so it does stand out pretty well, better than in the pictures. And the highlights on the dragon is actually a clear coat vinyl that has small dimples in it, up close it looks amazing ;D

As for the people asking about a template, or selling it, or prices and all that jazz:

I still have the template (Of the guitar and of the dragon). We used a machine cutter to actually cut the vinyl for us, which would mean we used vector based art. I actually found the design on deviantart.com (I should give the dude credit eh =P) and converted it to a vector, then we took dimensions of the guitar (approx 9 by 4 or 5 I forget) and we said Print (or cut, either way works). It took about 2 and a half hours to actually apply, as there are 6 seperate layers of vinyl I believe.

If anyone wants these templates, I will upload them when I get back to work monday, and post a link in the thread so your more than willing to use them. As for price of vinyl, I am unsure. The perforated vinyl is expensive I know, but I am unsure as to actual price. It's the same stuff they use to put vinyl on cars and all that.

As for selling custom vinyl jobs, well that would be great and I would love to do it but there are a few problems:
A) I would have to get permission, and my company would have to at least make some money off of it (not me, which is fine i'd do it for free if I had a cutter).

B) The buyer would have to apply the vinyl themself, which requires at least a basic understanding of how it works, how not to have air bubbles, what to do around corners. Of course that is all depending upon the actual intricateness of the design, anyone can put a circle on a guitar fairly easily lol.

I'll check on it... that's all I can say is I can try :)

Anyone interested in seeing pics from a rock band party tonite staring dragon guitar? :p

Yeah it looks sweet but what happens when it breaks and you have to return it for a replacement?

Your Strat looks awesome... I have a vinyl cutter in my basement... I might just have to take orders for custom jobs. What do you all think something like that would be worth? I guess it would depend on how complex of a design it is... Give me some ideas... e-mail me sketches... I can convert them into vector art for cutting.

My boss was talking to me about it today after he saw this thread =P We wouldn't be able to apply any vinyl, but cutting, selling, and shipping would be fine.

Its the Eric Clapton "Crossroads Antigua" Guitar. Only 100 of em in the world. I even added strings, but that would be hard to do :/ still looks cool

This is somethign that could be done very easily and cost little to pull off, In fact I think anyone who has ever used a sticker could apply this vinyl.

I do admit the fake strings and pickups look pretty hot too, and the action ( i think that's what ya call it ) is a nice flair, Anyone have a dremel tool and an extra guitar lol? =P

thats been done before, try looking on google. Someone tore apart a 600 dollar Fender Stratocaster..drilled holes, chizzled out the back broke peices off, just to turn it into a GH3/rock band controller...im sorry, but that screams bad idea
