I'm very excited to learn that TB:RB is compatible with my (Wii) World Tour instruments as well as my Nyko Frontman.
I'm wondering how drumming is going to work, since the number and color sequence of my drum pads are different from those of the RB kit.
Will the game alter the highway to fit my GH drum kit, or will I have to mentally translate the colors as I play?
Will my orange cymbal be ignored?

The orange cymbal is ignored, and yeah, if you can get a new kit I would recommend the RB kit.
I played the GHWT kit on RB2 a few times, the orange cymbal is ignored, but the yellow cymbal is mainly used for a high hat in RB anyway so it's not all that awkward, if you count the yellow cymbal as a pad, they all go in the same order, red yellow blue green, so it's not that hard to play.

World Tour's kit is set up so strangely, the Rock Band kit is a lot more realistic in the long run if you get cymbals,

I don't recall off the top of my head...but aside from the orange all of the other pads are in the same order as an RB kit right (red/yellow/blue/green)?

The orange cymbal is the same thing as is you had a blue cymbal attached to the RB2 kit, at least in RB2.

What does that mean, exactly? Does it mean I will see blue notes on the highway that require me to strike the orange cymbal? And how can there be a blue cymbal attachment when there is already a blue pad? This is very confusing.

What EvilGamerX is saying is true in at least the Wii version..the different-colored pads function with their corresponding colors in RB2, but the orange pad functions as if it were a blue cymbal--if you hit it, it's as if you were hitting a blue pad, but it makes a blue cymbal sound in fills/BREs.

Sorry to be a pain here, but I'm just not that familiar with the RB kit. Are you saying essentially that there's a "blue tom" and a separate "blue cymbal" that can both be used to satisfy a blue note requirement, but they can make different sounds during fills and endings? So then I guess on my GH kit I could, just for variety, hit the orange cymbal as an alternate blue tom, but it would have no real effect on gameplay.

Yes, they both can be used to hit a blue note in game, the only difference is that the cymbal will make a ride sound in fills and in the freestyle play, and the normal blue pad will make a mid tom sound. It makes no difference in game, it is only for people who want a more realistic set.
