Hi, as you could probably have guessed from the title of this thread, I am a bassist. I'm kind of a beginner with it, working toward some more complex stuff, but I have a problem. When I use my fingers to pluck the noise I get from the strings sounds strange, whereas when I use a pick it sounds as it should. I wanna break my habit of using a pick, but I can't get the right sound without it. Any advice?

It sounds like you still need to strengthen your fingers some. Doing some finger excercises should help you out.

So that's why I get that garbagey sound?

It could be, it can also be that you aren't fretting the frets hard enough with your fingers that cause a vibrating sound or your plucking them too hard and therefore causing string vibration. It's hard to tell without actually seeing the issue or hearing it.

The frets can't be the issue, because when I play with a pick I get the right sounds from the frets.

When I use my fingers I hear the basic sound of what it should like, but it's distorted underneath vibration.

Hmm, well the only thing I can tell you is keep practicing finger plucking and watch videos on how it's done. Possibly, you're not doing it correctly?

Also when you finger pick, it will always be lower and have a more bass type of sound than a pick.

Thanks for the help. I guess I'm gonna have to watch some videos.
