Well, I took my car to the shop today for an oil change, only to find that that odd noise from my car was the lack of brake pads I had...
It was down, metal to metal, and started to screw up the rotor.
Being 19, and paying for rent/bills/school, etc, I can't afford to throw down the $1100 to fix it right now. Thus, I'm debating selling my xbox, games, guitar, etc for the cash necessary to fix it.
Of course, I'd prefer not to have to do this, and would much rather be playing The Beatles: Rock Band on 9.9.9.
Any suggestions for quick cash that doesn't involve sexual favors? xD
No, but seriously.. hmm..

Well, if the Beatles are that important, and they should be, i suggest trying a few hours at a DIY project. Google (or bing) brake pads replace DIY or something along those lines if you want to save money. And you could change the oil yourself as well, its really easy, just get a big pan and some random tools.

I've found that my kelvin-measured scrapscrewmasockethammer works best for this sort of job. Oh, and my 3 iron.

Do you really need your own car at college?
Isn't everything on campus within walking distance?
I have never owned a car in my life and I am 38.
Owning a car is a burden where I live, in san francisco everything I need is within walking or biking distance or accessible by public transportation.
Do yourself, the earth and your bank account a favor and try going car-less.

Time to invest on a bike! It seems like your best bet if you TRULY want to play TB:RB. You won't get as much as you thing for the 360 & such, but bikes are the way to go ;D

My god I would never do that, I could not imagine riding a bike everywhere. Then again I do live in AZ and its 90+ by 7am and 110+ in the afternoon
If I had to go through what he's going through, I'd have to suck it up and try and save up to repair the car, even in that heat :s

I've considered getting a bike. I guess one of the larger concerns of mine is what if I get the money and pay off the car? Then I'll be back to having no money again, which isn't a lifestyle I'm very willing to have. xD
And I don't know squat about car either, so ordering my own parts is out of the question. From the looks of it, I'll be either asking for a raise soon, or getting a second job. I don't know. 2 jobs and college...hmm... :/

That's my advice, too, if you know anyone who could help. Get a second opinion from another mechanic to be sure.Assuming you really DO absolutely need the car. If not, then consider waiting to get it repaired.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying your priorities should be to the game. But man, you would lose a TON of money selling stuff right now. The amount of money you would actually get wouldn't come anywhere close to what you'd pay replacing it. That in addition to the cost of fixing the car.
Do you live in an area with public transportation? Where DO you live?

Dude get a bike.
Although it depends on where you live.
You can take a bus as well.

I live in the Denver area of Colorado. I'm only a couple miles from work and school. I think tomorrow, or within the next couple days I'm going to head back the the auto shop, tell them I can't afford a fix quite yet, and bring my car back to the apartment. Then I'll grab my old bike from my parents house next time I can visit, invest in a bike lock, and use that for a while.
I'd rather just let the car sit at home than selling crap to get money, paying for the repair, and then realizing I don't have enough money afterwards to live and buy groceries. :/

Bike. It's healthy for you and the environment. I'm sorry that happened at such an inconvienient time. It seems it always works out that way. A few miles isn't bad, you'll just have to plan ahead and leave your apartment earlier.

You won't get much cash for your games, and you'll regret it later. Now's the time to take every game you can live without and take 'em to Gamestop and see what kind of trade-in deal they can give you toward TB:RB. If the offer's ridiculously low, take your games home again.
Got many CDs and DVDs you don't need? Go to SecondSpin.com. You can learn right up front how much cash they'll give you for each title.

To the OP: Do what you need to do to survive. Waiting a couple of weeks to play the game won't kill you. It'll still be there and we'll all still be playing it. (Ugh,I sound like such a grownup).

Sell current crap car and a few select Xbox games.
Purchase new crap car (or better yet, some kind of moped, or FLCL-esq vespa) that isn't crap as much and enjoy Beatles.

Well, I'm think I'm going to keep TB:RB. I've been excited for this game for far too long to just throw it out the window at the last minute.
My cousin's fiance is an auto mechanic, and told me I can stop by his place in a nearby city, and he'll see if he can do the job for cheaper. Even then, I don't think I'll get it fixed right away. I'll see if I can grab my old bike and see if I'll be able to start saving so that I can repair the car and still have money left over.
Side note: I've noticed that I am unable to get my profile pic to appear as an avatar on the forums. Is it a waiting game, or is there some method that I seem to have overlook? :P Thanks!

Donate blood and semen. This, but plasma you can't sell blood. You get 20- 30 each time and you can do it twice a week. 50- 75 per Sperm donation depending how good it is. You can do clinical trial if your willing to whore out your body also.
This entire post was done with some sarcasm and not recommended.

first suggestion, dont go to a shop, they screw you over.
second suggestion, pay more attention, didn't you notice your breaks not responding as they should of been, taking forever to slow you down ?
third suggestion, instead of 1100 on your car, why don't you just junk the car, scrap it to somebody who will buy it from you for a few hundred, and use that couple hundred dollars to buy a different used car that isn't broken, learn from your mistake, and save a ton of money while driving a different car.
You can get a used car for way cheaper than 1100, mine cost 100 dollars and has lasted me 3 years in fantastic condition, it's been more reliable than any of my friends and families cars, and has outlasted far newer, nicer models.

That sounds like a good plan. I wish I could bike to my place of work, but I currently live in the Atlanta suburbs and I'm about to move to the Tampa suburbs. Neither is likely to be in a place where I will live within 10 miles of work.

Or use that outdated biological mobile technology called "legs". Those things that when wiggled make your weight dropped.
Weird, but yeah.

I don't know about the cost of used cars in the US but surely you could pick up a cheap run about for less than the cost of the repair to your current vehicle?

I hear plasma brings in a good amount and you can donate bi-weekly.

This seems like the wisest thing to do. And if you have a few extra pounds to lose, you may get them off by biking to work and school. I'd also suggest to invest in a cheap CamelBack. Probably the best ways to hydrate yourself while biking or doing most outdoor activities. Wal-Mart usually has good ones for about 15 bucks with the CamelBack Bladder as well as a backpack for it.

dude, seriously, try a different mechanic. $1100 US to change some brake pads is rediculous.
i got quoted 990 by a subaru dealer to replace ROTORS AND PADS and i managed to do it myself for approx 200 bucks. i had help from a mate, surely you will know someone that can change brakes. if not, shop around, i guarantee you will get it a lot cheaper than that.
those people saying he should junk the car. it may be a decent car. worth a lot more than 1100 bucks. sounds like he has a loan for it too so if he sold it he would have to pay it off leaving him with nothing.
BurningTheory

Yeah, I decided its not worth junking, as it it a nice car. And hell, I had already replaced the alternator, so it would be a waste to just toss it now. Especially if fixing the brakes and rotors will keep it running for a long time. Even if I found a car for cheap, it will more than likely be a fixer-upper.
@ joe - Actually, the only issue I could tell was the sound. I found everything else to be quite normal! (Except for my speedometer, which would jump occasionally, or about a week ago when my cruise control decided it didn't want to work for a few hours :/ haha)
@ Zorbaru - Wow! $200! I hope I can find someone to fix mine for that much!

Ah, yes, the sound is miserable, I just replaced the break pads on my car 2 months ago, and before I replaced them my break performance was terrible.
