In a great interview from Blast with Eric Brosius, Harmonix's resident audio guru (http://blastmagazine.com/the-magazine/gaming/gaming-news/2009/09/beatles-rock-band-harmonix-audio-lead-eric-brosius/) (originally posted in the Rumors and Facts thread by GloiGloi), we get this...

BL: Did you sit down initially and say, ‘We know we’re going to have forty-five songs,’ and then get a list of the catalog and cross things out, or did you start with a blank page, and say, ‘We have to have this one, and we have to have that one?’
EB: Well, we knew that we were going to have roughly forty to fifty songs, but we didn’t know exactly until the whole deal was worked out. So basically, everyone wrote down sixty or seventy of their favorite songs, and it was a bunch of the higher-ups at Harmonix, and the people at Apple, and Giles, and everyone, and we all kind of got together and came up with about forty-five, and then once in a while Giles would say, ‘Oh, I know this one can’t work, because this was actually just recorded on one track,’ and we would just kind of work it out.
Knowing as we do that it has been said before that Help! was on one track, this sounds like confirmation that Harmonix wanted Help! and then learned they couldn't do it. So this might mean... never.

No one knows, but they did get some very ealry tracks that might have been one track.

And I misunderstanding the meaning of the phrase "work it out"?

And the fact Help! isn't the only song recorded on one track?

doesn't seem to prove or disprove anything IMO

That is true. And in the same interview, he talks about how it would be impossible to get Please Please Me as a full album because of those limitations. But it strikes me as being very conspicuous. Help! is a song that seems like it would be especially hard to separate the instruments. Maybe I'm totally wrong and this is actually the reason that Please Please Me isn't ever going to be playable.

If so, then everyone please just enjoy the interview! It's a good one!

But in another interview with Harmonix, knowing that they couldn't already split the audio with today's tools, they actually teamed up with Giles Martin(?) and forged a tool to remove one part of the track, and keep the other instruments in tact.

Some songs that are already in the game have actually been edited by this tool. Of course, it's the early ones.

Like in, I think in ‘Strawberry Fields,’ you might end up playing the string parts a little bit on the guitar. This caught my attention. Remember the strawberry fields piano is on the elifino's back.
