I was playing the other day and while whammy-ing i heard a click and then my whammy bar went limp. as in it wont spring back. it still registers and everything, but now i have to manually pull it back and forth.
i know this is something that would be covered by the warranty, but i dont feel like waiting. it seems like a really easy fix if i just open up the guitar and take a quick look, but if i cant fix it i would like to still be able to get a replacement.
my question is: has anyone opened up their guitar and then tried to return it later? is there any way for them to know i opened it?
btw its a ps3 strat if anyone cares.

Someone did a walkthrough of the guitar opened up a while back for modding and stuff. Take a look at those pictures and see if it looks like something you can handle.

my buddy broke my whammy..
it's a really simple fix involving a rubber band if you really hafta do it right now.
you open it up and look and go. ohhhhh thats really easy..
on mine.. the actual spring broke. so if i replace that it's good as new. since i didnt break it i dont know if it made a noise.
on yours it might be the plastic holding the spring in broke. assuming some super glue or some other handy work would fix it.
as far as risking the void.. thats up to you.
an even EASIER NON-voiding fix for that.. rubber band on the outside. from the inner part of the whammy to the strap ""button"" looks kinda silly. but it works. and it definitely wont void.

This has happened to me twice. It's an extremely simple fix, assuming you have a pair of good tweezers and perhaps some needle-nose pliers. Simply open the back of the guitar, remove the spring entirely, make a new loop out of the broken end, and latch it back onto the two hooks. Then put the screws back (the two shortest ones going into the upper contour, the four longest serving as neck bolts) and you're back in business. All told, it has taken me ~5 minutes to fix each time this has happened. By far the hardest part is making the new loop in the spring.

By far the hardest part is making the new loop in the spring.
LIES! (unless you have a drill) the hardest part is removing like 15 screws!! tkaes me about 10 mins to do that 2 mins to fix then another 10 to put it back together.. i need to find my drill..

I decided to bite the bullet and open it up. turns out the one loop at the end of the spring broke. i used pliers to make a new loop out of the end of the spring just like Waryyhn said. seems to work fine now.
Thanks for the support!

My whammy bar spring snapped in half within 5 days of getting the game. I replaced it with one out of a pen, looping it halfway along it's length at one end.
As budget as that sounds, it's worked without a hitch for the last three weeks.

They same thing happened to me, but i didnt reuse my spring as i decided is was a crappy gauge of wire to use for the excessive amount of whamming(sp?) we do on our guitars, so i upgraded my spring.
The new spring needed to have some coils cut to make it a lil smaller to fit with some good resistance on the spring. I cut some of the coils off, made a loop the best i could with what i had, and popped it on.
resulting in a much stronger whammy bar, and i know i wont break it, and if i do, i have 4 more of these springs to use... here are the pics

My whammy just broke last night. This is my 2nd guitar too, so I'm getting pretty mad at this point.
I've already put in for the replacement, we'll see if it gets here before Christmas. They should start sending out 2 guitars to replace every one that breaks. That way when the new one breaks, you'll have a spare to play while it's being replaced.:(

Nice Ex7r3m3r. I was thinking about using a heavier gauge spring but I was a little concerned about how much force it would be putting on the plastic switch components. How does yours feel and how long have you had it in place?

Well it really feels quite the same, maybe a lil tougher, but when i first put it on i pulled my whammy bar all the way for a sec to stretch it out so it would be a little easier to whammy and on the plastic. I don't whammy hard at all just to be easy on it, no need to go crazy. I've had it on there for 4 days now, thought about opening it up again just to check it to see what it looks like and if there is any damage to anything

Thanks mate. It looks like a good spring you've got there. All the best with it!
