I guess because they would have to compress the audio.

It's a grand old system but it is exactly that: old. It's getting up towards 10 years old.
Also, inb4 why aren't they releasing it on Gamecube/Saturn/SNES/NES/Atari/Commodore 64 etc.

You've had 6 months notice on this..it's not new news that TB:RB isn't going to be on a 10 year old system. Go for a Wii if you're really desperate or just give up & upgrade to an Xbox..I mean, it is The Beatles.

Well, it is not like it couldn't be done. I don't think, at least.
Rock Band 1 and 2 were fine on PS2.

Harmonies require processing power that the PS2 does not have.

Yeah, maybe. That's what I was thinking.
But, still... they could always remove harmonies from the PS2 version or something.

Both of those are old systems too.
If you really want a new system:

I'd suggest the 360 Elite but I'm probably biased.

If you have Rock Band 1/2 instruments for your PS2, get a PS3. All the instruments are compatible, the new PS3 slim is only 300 bucks, and you wouldn't need to buy more instruments for The Beatles: Rock Band, just use what you have.
Oh, and I own a PS3 and I AM HAPPY :)

You might as well get a 360 if you're getting it for Beatles, because you can get one for the same price plus much better graphics and DLC albums.

That's pretty good advice. I had a PS2 until January of this year, played RB1 and the GH games on it. I knew it would be time to upgrade once I could afford it, and weighed the pros and cons of XBox360 vs PS3.
I personally decided on the XBox because it's the platform my friends play on and Netflix is our substitute for TV. But if you have a lot of controllers and want the most economical way to enjoy TB:RB, get the PS3.
Whatever you do, don't get a Wii. We keep warning people about this, they keep ignoring us, and then they're disappointed when it doesn't live up to their expectations. There are a lot of Wiii enthusiasts around here, but there are equally as many complaints about the platform. They expect a level of support from HMX that they've never been promised and is beyond the capability of their systems. That way lies great sadness.

Instead of whining about not being able to buy the game, put the money you were gonna use towards a new system.

If he's getting it for the Beatles, I'd definitely suggest the 360 because if I'm correct DLC comes out a few days earlier and All You Need Is Love is out on the 360 for a while before the PS3 and Wii. It's $50 for a year if you plan on playing online, but from what I've heard from people who've used the PS3's online gaming and Xbox Live Xbox Live is better.

Even though I linked to the Wii I wouldn't suggest it when you can get a 360 Pro for the same price or a 360 Elite or PS3 for $50 more.

hahah, yeah. I forgot to mention that. I have a PS3 myself, (& a Wii) but I get just about everything on the 360.

I went and got a PS3 because I have a decent PC, so I already have 90% of Xbox's games. I also have a Wii.

My friend got a PS3 and eventually got a 360. He doesn't use his PS3 as much any more that I know of. I think he said the online play isn't as good, so he gets just about everything on the 360.

Well I'm pretty sure that PS2 versions of Rock Band are based off of the Wii version. But now the Wii version of the game is closer to the Xbox360/PS3 then the Playstation 2. But maybe its just because PS2 is old :p You better upgrade now because I assume that when RB3 comes out it won't be for PS2
