Rush as a band is amazingly talented. However i never got into them because they just seemed experimental just for the sake of being experimental.

Plus, geddy lee's voice?

His voice is awesome man, not many people can sing like that and have a career for 30 plus years

Very true, take robert plant for example... dying vocal chords halfway through the bands career. But just the sound of his voice is grating in some ways. I don't deny how amazing he is at bass / bass + keyboard at the same time

2112 is simply the best Rush album, in my opinion...
Moving Pictures would be a close second in my book...

Hemispheres is my favorite album followed by Permanent waves, A Farewell to Kings, Grace Under Pressure, Moving Pictures, Caress of Steel, 2112, Signals, Snakes and Arrows, Power Windows, Hold your Fire, Counterparts, Fly By night, Rush, Presto, Test For Echo, Vapor Trails (only cuz of the bad production), then lastly, Roll the Bones (though I still like the album.). Feedback is another good album, but it's covers. Also i love their live stuff.

The fact that Snakes and Arrows is included among those others is high praise. I've heard that it's more like their older (better) stuff. I really like them from 2112 up to Grace Under Pressure, but then I lost interest in their direction (though I did pick up Roll the Bones and Test for Echo, but I didn't listen to those nearly as much as I did the others).

2112 and Moving Pictures are their best.

Snakes and Arrows is great. Actually so is Vapor Trails, it just was produced poorly.

Also Counterparts is their best Album of the 90's , you should check that out.

Hmmm, if I could pick only one... I think it'd be Caress of Steel. Without it, there is no 2112. It's their foray into a concept album. They were proud of what they did musically, they should've been! Bastille Day, Lakeside Park, The Necromancer, the silly I Think I'm Goin' Bald, and of course the 20 minute B side, The Fountain of Lamneth.

Though it wasn't a hit with the public; so in what they thought was their dying gasp(Mecury/Polygram was gonna' let them go), they create 2112, a masterpiece filled with anger and frustration at the established order; Which became a resounding success, and ensured their place at the Mecury/Polygram table for years to come.

A great album and an absolutely critical piece in their 34 year history of making outstanding music. I have to give it to Caress of Steel.

Rush is one of my favorite bands of all time.

I'd have to go with either 2112 or Moving Pictures.

lol, WHAT?! Geddy's voice is apropos to the unique style they have, and as for being experimental just "to be experimental" what the hell does that even mean

Like everyone else said 2112 and Moving Pictures, You can't go wrong with either.
but on another note...FTW

I personally like the earlier stuff (anything before the 80's). But for a good start to a Rush collection, 2112 hands down. But you'd be better off just buying all the Rush you can.

For me, it would be a toss up between Snakes and Arrows and Moving Pictures...

2112 is a great, great song. But as an album, it's way overrated. You have the title track, which is great. And Passage To Bangkok, which is very good. but then there's Lessons and Tears ... two crappy (by Rush standards) songs. Something For Nothing is solid, but nothing outstanding.

Then there's an album like A Farewell to Kings - which I think is Rush's masterpiece. It has four of Rush's best songs on it - the title track, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 and Closer to the Heart. Sure, the album has Cinderella Man and Madrigal, which aren't as strong, but on their own, those two tracks are much better than Lessons and Tears.

Of course, all this is IMO, but that's my take.

Permanent Waves
Hold Your Fire
Snakes & Arrows

They were most commercially successful with Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. So if you're looking for hits, these are the albums to get.

Still, you should also check A Farewell to Kings. I think it's a better and more consistent album than 2112 (which has an excellent 20 minute epic title track but little else worth mentioning). Fly By Night is a great example of early Rush, and Caress of Steel is an underrated early gem. If you want to check out later Rush, try Grace Under Pressure, Test for Echo and Vapor Trails. Their latest album, Snakes and Arrows, is also worth checking out.

What got me hooked on Rush was the R30 CD/DVD set. Amazing performance and has most of the great songs from a lot of the albums mentioned. I would recommend this for someone starting out. The best part is you can watch the DVD at home and listen to the CD in your car, the audio is exactly the same on both.

I don't own all of the albums yet, but I have many of them and am looking to complete it as soon as I can. Some of my favourite albums are:

2112
Moving Pictures
Farewell to Kings
Snakes and Arrows

Hope this helps.
