Earlier today me and a one of my mates were discussing Rock Band and the ability to go head to head with another band. Now, I got thinking...
"How are they going to put bands into groups?" because my band consists of very average players. I've almost completed GH II on expert and like my other guys are either now on hard or just on expert.Basically I don't wanna have to go up against super groups I want it to remain fun, of course I want to face people a little better than my group occasionally, but I was just wondering what any of you lot thought on the subject?
PS: BRING ON THE ROCK!

Good question actually... how will they make it fair if some play medium and the other band is all on expert? Especially if people play on medium just to win?
I guess like with halo they could matchmake based on settings.... only play with other expert players, etc.

well if they have a head to head mode they should probably have each person pick the difficulty before they enter the match..then they pair them up against someone on the same difficulty

Hoping so. I wanna be playing people on hard/medium settings. It'll be fun either way :)

Yah, I would assume difficulty would be picked before bands were matched.
lithiumkc: Experts playing down a level is a problem in any online game. What if I play on Medium/Hard but my friends who suck want to play on easy against other players on easy over the net? I would be disappointed if they couldn't do so because I always play higher.

I agree... I think the smartest thing to do would be to rank in each respective difficulty, and have unranked games for different difficulties, just for fun.

Yea it should be interesting. That was the biggest problem I had with GH1, because I would play on hard/expert, but my friend could play on medium at best. And you had to play on the same difficulty.
They fixed it for GH2, but this is the first time you're playing with different settings in your band, meanwhile going up against other bands with totally different settings as well.

Well I would guess matchmaking coupled with choosing your own difficulty should fix that.
But you do know band vs. band gameplay has not been announced right? Only instrument vs. instrument.

I can see band vs band being up there.. but.. I think a more feasible option would be to have band leaderboards, and i suspect they'd go with that.

Yeah. Still it'd be awesome.

Everyone knows though, people are gonna be craving for a Battle of the Bands type mode where you can go up against other bands head to head.
We'll just have to cross our fingers :D

lol yeah it is...and a battle of the bands mode would...make this game...too good to be true...people would get so much enjoyment out of pitting their band against others...it would probably boost sales a bunch too

But I guess if they put everything in this game, there would be no reason for us to buy Rock Band 2!

I don't know if Band vs. Band is even possible. You wouldn't know the other band's effort, just their final score, because there's no way to have 8 instruments on screen at once. It'll end up being just like a leaderboard anyway.

spare the addition of a keyboard and brass section!

I don't understand why people think there MUST be 8 on the screen at the same time. They could easily do 4 and 4, with the other teams current score/streak etc in a space somewhere on the screen.

Yea, one thing you'll notice in videos where they show band co-op, is that in the top right under the lyrics is where the overall score is, along with stars showing how well your performance is.
They could put just below that how well the other band is doing. Showing their score and how many stars they're earning as you go along through the song.
That way when you see your score/stars, if you're only raking it 150k pts and 4 stars you know you gotta step it up when you see the other band is having a 5-star performance with 180k so far or something.

that would pretty much be the only way to do it.....
thats no better than an online leaderboard really.

It wouldn't really feel like a direct competition though.

it would make it more fun to see 8..but itd be near impossible to pull off...maybe little divisions of leaderboards..and then one big one...

I personally don't have time to watch someone elses notes fly by while playing my own.

IF band vs band was in it, I'd actually get into the more realistic idea of one band plays.. then another band plays.. with each (and other people) spectating the others.
Okay, I wouldn't want it all the time.. but for something like a battle of the band tournament where people are evenly matched and it's the semi/finals.. then yeah.. I want to see both bands play seperately and be on the edge of my seat

Yeah I'm not sure about direct band vs band play but a battle of the bands type scenario would be cool. So you would have to play a certain set list of songs and your scores get uploaded onto a leaderboard specific for that tournament and not at all related to the overall rankings of the game.
As far as actually matching up players online I'm pretty sure I remember one of the devs (maybe DanT) mentioning in their rock blog that they are working on a match making system. So I suppose it'll use data of your solo career/freeplay scores to figure out who you would best group with.
This might also mean that you need to finish solo career on whatever difficulty at least once before online play can be unlocked? I wouldn't mind that.

I wouldn't mind that either. You really should play the offline game a bit anyways to get used to it before you take your band online anyways. And I think the thing about your rival bands score being posted under yours while playing would be awesome. I see nothing wrong with it. And it is different than having a leaderboard because if you were playing and glanced up to see you're a bit behind, it gives you a chance to step it up. Ya know?

Exactly what I was saying! But yea, that tournament mode also works so that it's leaderboards, then when it's getting closer to elimination you can spectate other bands' performances. That would definitely be suspenseful as opposed to just checking their score afterward.

The same way they did for the co-op on GH2. Different players will be able to play on different difficulties. I don't think you will be going against super bands, it will be based on TrueSkill.Example: I'm playing expert and my band plays expert and we suck at the orange button, and your band has people who are good at their difficulty I doubt they would pair us up unless there were few people playing online.
