Well, it depends on the type of person you are. I'm sure no matter who you are, if you start off and keep playing you'll get better. But there are people who are naturally good and just keep getting better and better.

When I started out, I kept trying to beat the song 'The breaking wheel' on GH1 on expert, it was the only song I played and I failed it tons of times and it took me a while to beat. Though when I did beat it, I moved up to other songs I liked. Next was cowboys from hell, took me forever to beat as well. I decided to start the career once I had the game, was able to get up to Bark at the moon which I couldn't even touch when I was playing The breaking wheel, and I beat that after a while.

When GH2 came out, I started off expert right away, got stuck on Psychobilly freakout, Hangar 18, and Freebird for a long time. Jordan still killed me, Rock the 80s came out, started on Expert and beat it the first day. Gh3 came out started on expert, rocked the hell out of it. Got stuck on the devil for a day, beat him the next, beat through the fire and flames within a week, beat the standalone version of the devil went down to georgia. Went back to GH2, beat Jordan, voila. I've beaten the hardest songs in GH history =]

That's how I went, I'm confident than when i get Rock band, I'll be able to beat all songs first try, except maybe Green Grass and High tides. It all just depends =]

No matter how good or bad you start out, it is definately something you learn over time.

Very few, if any, start out at that highest echelon of skill levels.

That's the great thing about human nature, seriously. The more you do something, the better you'll get at it, and that's true of everyone and everything.

I've never been a particularly fast learner of the guitar and drums. While I got up to playing hard guitar reasonably quickly on GH2, I was never able to quite conquer it, and therefore, never made the transition to expert. That carried over to GH3; I actually consider myself a medium-class player.

With the drums I'm much the same. It's taken me a while (what feels like a while) to get to hard, and despite being halfway through hard on the solo tour right now, I've gotten to songs that I don't feel I'll ever beat. But then, I've passed songs that I thought I'd never beat before too, so you do get better, even if at times it's terribly frustrating.

For the most part, Rock Band is definitely a "learn over time" type game, and that's just another reason why I like it so much. No other games reward sheer playing time with an increase in ability quite like these music ones do.

Yeah, it's definitely something you get better at over time. Some people are "naturals," or have a slight advantage because they're musically inclined, and can pick up the basics a bit easier than others...but that's all it really helps you with, is the basics. I guarantee you, the people you see playing on Expert that are insanely good didn't just start out like that. It took them TONS of practice to get that good (although a lot of them seem to forget that fact).

Which is actually one of the things that makes music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero so much fun, because it really gives you a feeling of accomplishment to be able to see your skills increase, and start pulling off things you thought you'd never be able to do. I started out on Easy guitar with the first GH game, struggled an insane amount with the orange button on Hard just like everyone else, and now I've beaten Jordan (one of the toughest songs in GH history). It's pretty cool. :)

i'd say honestly, the only thing you'll be able to pick up and play right away is the guitar, but only if you've already played Guitar Hero games.. i mean if you were playing Expert on GH 1-3, then you'll be able to pick up Rock Band and play Expert guitar and bass, although it will take an hour or two to get used to the lag and the different appearance of the notes and all that..

the drums are definitely something you'll need to learn a little bit.. and singing will probably be something you can do or you can't, lol.. even though you'll still definitely be able to practice vocals as well and get better over time..

now playing the band world tour mode.. that's something that will take some time, especially depending on how many people you play with.. if you have a singer who plays on easy and a guitarist who plays on medium, it'll take awhile to get your whole band up to expert, meaning also that it will take awhile to gain more fans (since you cap out at each level, until everybody is playing on expert - then you can get as many fans as you earn).. but thats half the fun, in my opinion.. its a lot of fun to get stuck on a song (believe it or not) and then keep practicing it on expert and FINALLY beat it with your band.. it feels like you guys actually put work into it in the garage or something, lol..

all in all, it'll take some time to learn, but believe me when i tell you, that's definitely most of the fun of the game.. you'll get frustrated for sure, but you'll also get better! have fun, that's the most important part

Like the other guy, i played since GH1..long time ago. I made it up to hard difficulty in like 3 days..but i never was fully able to do all the expert songs...So i stuck with hard. When rockband came out, i learned a bit more, and i made it though green grass on expert..so i think i can finally say i can do expert..but remember how long it took (i got GH1 on release week)

A lot of it depend on you musical background. I can give you three good examples

1) ME: I've been playing drums and brass my whole life. When I picked up GH2 for the first time I hated it. It made no sense to me and it took me about 3 hours of playing time to understand the very basics of using the guitar controller. Within a couple days I was muddling my way through on medium. (at which point time I was having a blast.) GH3 came out about a month after I bought GH2 and I bought it first day. Was able to beat the game on medium and play about half of the songs on hard. I played casually.. a few hours here and there.

Rock band came out and I got it first day. Moved up to hard within a couple days (on guitar). Vocals I played on Medium right out of the box, and drums.. I started on medium right out of the box. I still haven't moved up on vocals, but on the drums I moved to hard after about an hour because Hard is easier for me.

2) My wife: Doesn't play video games and has never played music. Took her about 5 minutes to figure out how to sing on hard in RB, and the first time she picked up the RB guitar controller she was able to play about half the songs in the game on medium. Go figure. lol.

3) My best friend: He's been playing drums/guitar his entire life. He doesn't play often, but he muddles through on the guitar. He was able to play Drums on HARD right out of the box though.

So.. the moral of the story is... the GAME is easy. Doesn't take long to figure out how the note scroll etc. works. It's your ability to manipulate the controllers that matters.

If you are good at drums IRL you'll be able to play on hard. Playing on expert requires being good at the RB game too.

Hope this is helpfull.
