Could someone tell me what the number is next to the nickname?

That is your controller number.

if its on xbox live multiplayer, it means that it is logged in with a 'guest' account, you will also see someone with the same name and no number next to it, that it the account holder, but they have a friend at thier house playing with them as a 'guest'
