Does anyone know if this has to be done on expert or can it be done on hard? or even a combination of both?

I think it can be done on any combination of difficulties and instruments. But I did it all on expert guitar and bass, so I'm just assuming about different difficulties. The description doesn't say anything about it so I'd imagine not.

Any difficulty, any instrument.

I played through and 5 starred all but 5 or 6 songs on Expert Bass, and then went back and got those on Hard Drums and was given the achievement.

same here..I was on expert drums for most of the game, but the ones I failed out of, I went to hard and 5 starred them, then back to expert to keep on truckin'. I ended up getting that achievement along with "Day Tripper" achievement.
